JACKSON, Miss. -Entered into rest July 27, 2008 in Jackson, Mississippi, Mrs. Mildred "Mimi" Murray was born in Lodgegrass, Montana in 1921. She was the daughter of the late Dr. & Mrs. Richard Torpin of Augusta, GA. She moved with her family in 1935 to Augusta where Dr. Torpin took the Chairmanship of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Georgia School of Medicine. Graduating from Tubman High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill she received a degree in Elementary Education and Library Science and did graduate work at Emory University and Mississippi colleges. In 1943 Mrs. Murray married the late John R. Peterson. During World War II she worked in the Finance Office at Daniel Field in Augusta and in the circulation department of Warder Public Library in Springfield, Ohio. In 1965, Mrs. Murray moved to Jackson, Mississippi where Mr. Peterson accepted the position of Associate Director of the Mississippi Research and Development Center. She began teaching with the opening of the St. Andrew's Episcopal School and remained there until 1983. Throughout her career, she was active in educational circles, supervising workshops and publishing a number of articles in teachers' magazines. She worked with the National Independent Schools Association, the Jackson Area Reading Council and the Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society. At the time of her death, she was an active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators in Jackson. In 1995 she married Maurice A. Murray of Augusta and Jackson. She is survived by her husband, one son Steve W. Peterson and wife Carol of Jackson, one daughter, Wendy Wallace and husband Mike of Raleigh, N.C. and her husband's three children, Teresa Smalley of Little Falls, Minn., Michelle Burroughs of Grovetown, Ga. and Norman Murray of Asheville, N.C. and many grandchildren.
