THOMSON --- Behind a stout defensive showing, the Thomson Bulldogs posted a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter on their way to a 19-3 win over the Hart County Bulldogs on Friday night.
"We were really concerned after seeing (Hart County) last week, because they seemed like a pretty good offensive football team," said Thomson defensive coordinator John Barnett. "So I was real pleased that we were able to keep them out of the end zone."
Hart County quarterback Landon Beck connected with tight end Jeffery Rucker on a pair of 10-yard passes. The drive that began on Hart County's 45 late in the first quarter ended with a 30-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter.
Thomson's defense began generating points of its own and setting up scores for the struggling offense. Thomson defensive end Dexter Sneed scooped up a Beck fumble on Hart County's 9-yard line and rumbled into the end zone with 7:40 remaining before halftime for a 6-3 lead.
"The ball fell on the ground. I had to pick it up. It's my dream to score a touchdown," said Sneed, whose only other career score came on a fumble recovery in Thomson's home opener last season.
Thomson took over after holding Hart County to three-and-out on the ensuing possession. Quarterback Brandon Turman then found room and scurried to the 18.
Wingback Jeremy McGahee snuck into the left corner of the end zone with 2:31 left before halftime to make it 13-3.
The offensive woes returned for both teams in the third quarter.
Each team was able to sustain one drive each. But after Thomson fullback James Bonner broke free for a 56-yard run to the Hart County 4, the Bulldogs were stuffed on four consecutive plays.
Hart County was forced to punt from its own end zone, giving Thomson excellent field position.
Four plays later, Turman dropped back from the 16-yard line and found sophomore receiver Nick Rau in the back of the end zone with 9:11 left in the game.
"I was ready to catch a pass," Rau said. "I told the quarterback before the pass to watch me. I was going to be open."
