John McCain and Barack Obama have sounded off on when they think life begins. Well, McCain has; Obama ducked the question, saying it was "above my pay grade."
Obama admits now that his answer was inappropriately flip. But he still hasn't answered it to any satisfaction.
When does life begin?
Abortion is sure to be of interest at the vice-presidential debate Oct. 2, given the candidates' differing views: Democrat Joe Biden is pro-choice while Republican Sarah Palin is pro-life.
It will be interesting to see how Biden dances around his pro-choice position. So far, he's been tripping over his own feet: When he said recently that the Catholic church's position that life begins at conception is a "personal and private" matter of faith, bishops excoriated him on both counts -- noting that it's not just a personal choice, and that the church doesn't write it off to faith, but rather to objective fact.
To that, we would simply add: When a human egg is fertilized, how often does it grow into something other than a human being?
Moreover, if Biden believes life begins at conception, as he claims he does, how can he write that life off to "personal choice"? Isn't knowingly ending an innocent person's life wrong?
If not, is Biden saying there are no moral absolutes?
That's not what his church believes.
"Protection of innocent human life is not an imposition of personal religious conviction but a demand of justice," the bishops wrote in rebuking Biden.
At a forum at famous pastor Rick Warren's church Aug. 16, McCain said life begins at conception. Period. Obama gave his non-answer. So, the debate between Biden and Palin may turn the biggest spotlight on the abortion issue in some time.
We hope the moderator presses the issue and gets some real answers.
For instance, if Mr. Obama is so unsure when life begins, how can he so easily accept the possibility that innocent human beings are being killed in the womb? If he's so unsure, if it's truly above his considerable U.S. Senate pay grade, why wouldn't he err on the side of protecting the unborn, just in case they happen to be little human beings?
And how on God's green Earth can Mr. Biden reconcile his belief that life begins at conception with his support of abortion?
