Five Gamecocks 'victims' in fracas

Five South Carolina players were involved in a lunchtime fight on campus Thursday.

A report from the university's police department listed the five players -- linebacker Antonio Allen , safety Akeem Auguste , offensive linemen Terrence Campbell , linebacker Melvin Ingram and receiver C.C. Whitlock -- as victims of a civil disturbance at the Russell House in the middle of campus.

Coach Steve Spurrier said he'd let the police and the university determine what happened and if penalties were necessary.

"None of our guys were hurt," Spurrier said.

"The only thing I think I know about it is that we are victims," defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson said.

- Spurrier said sophomore Chris Smelley would start Saturday against No. 2 Georgia.

Then, Spurrier threw in the words many have waited to hear the past two years: "There's a good chance (Stephen ) Garcia will play this week."

Garcia was a top recruit but has been beset by problems since he arrived in Columbia in January 2007.

But Spurrier has said that Garcia has cleaned up his act this season.

OHIO STATE: Coach Jim Tressel says it's doubtful that starting tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells will play Saturday night against top-ranked Southern California. However, he didn't rule him out.

Tressel said Thursday there was lingering soreness in Wells' right foot. Wells did not practice with the team Thursday.

Wells injured his right foot in the fifth-ranked Buckeyes' opener against Youngstown State, did not play last week against Ohio, and has not had contact in partial practices this week.

VIRGINIA: Quarterback Peter Lalich won't accompany the Cavaliers to Connecticut on Saturday, coach Al Groh said, so that he can focus on legal problems and not be a distraction.

Lalich, who has started the first two games, is due in Charlottesville General District Court on Sept. 26 for a hearing. The 20-year-old was arrested on an underage drinking charge July 13.

SCHEDULE CHANGE: Washington State-Baylor has been moved from 11:30 a.m. Saturday up to 7:30 tonight to avoid complications with Hurricane Ike.

UGA sent trouble makers to USC to try and get as many 'Cocks in trouble as possible. The ruckus was a ruse. I'm glad the school recognized this. Those 'Dawgs sure must be worried about the game Saturday, and I don't blame them. Go Gamecocks!!
