CARDINALS: Catcher Yadier Molina was out of the lineup Thursday, a day after being kneed in the thigh in a home plate collision.
Manager Tony La Russa said Molina was pretty sore with a deep bruise and he was hoping the catcher would only be sidelined a few games.
Molina was injured when Chicago Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly rammed into him trying to score from third on a groundout.
BREWERS: Right fielder Gabe Kapler has a torn muscle in his right shoulder and could miss the rest of the season.
Kapler will stay in Milwaukee and undergo physical therapy with the team in an effort to determine whether he can return this year.
The team said Thursday that Kapler is hopeful he can return this year, but gave no timetable for his recovery.
He left Wednesday's game after making a hard throw to the plate in the sixth inning against the Cincinnati Reds.
PADRES: Claimed right-hander Scott Patterson off outright waivers from the New York Yankees on Thursday.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Padres transferred catcher Michael Barrett to the 60-day disabled list.
Patterson will join the Padres for tonight's game against San Francisco. The 29-year-old Patterson made his big league debut this season with the Yankees, allowing one run in 1Q innings of relief with two strikeouts in his lone outing on June 1 at Minnesota.
ATHLETICS: Second baseman Mark Ellis will miss the rest of the season and could be headed for surgery to fix a shoulder injury that has taken longer to heal than initially expected. He hurt the shoulder Aug. 21 at Seattle when Jose Lopez broke up a double play at second base.
ORIOLES: All-Star reliever George Sherrill was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday.
Sherrill was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 19 with inflammation of the left shoulder. He is 3-5 with a 4.47 ERA with 31 saves in 53 appearances.
WHITE SOX: Frustrated by his latest bout with a sore back that has left him sidelined during his team's push for the playoffs, third baseman Joe Crede will seek a second opinion.
Crede batted .252 with 16 homers and 49 RBI in the first half. But he's batting .216 with one homer and six RBIs in 11 games during the second. He was 4-for-23 after coming off the disabled list before being sidelined again.
YANKEES: Hank Steinbrenner is disappointed New York could be eliminated from postseason play during Yankee Stadium's final homestand.
"We're going to have to look at what has been done wrong over the last five years, which I've had one year to try and figure out," he said. "Clearly, a lot of mistakes were made."
