Pacers open season with win at Kiawah
In Kiawah Island, S.C., the USC Aiken men's golf team won its season opener, beating Coker College by six strokes for a 17-under-par total of 559 at the Kiawah Island Invitational.
USC Aiken's J.P. Solis lost to Chris Marsh in a two-hole playoff for the individual title. Both players had rounds of 64 and 69 at Cougar Point.
- In Chattanooga, Tenn., Augusta State finished second at the Aldila Scenic City Invitational at Council Fire Golf Club.
The Jaguars were 14 shots behind Chattanooga with a 31-under-par total of 833 in their season opener. Junior Jake Amos led the team with 9-under 207 for sixth place.
- In St. Simons Island, Ga., Brenda Pictor of Marietta and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mount-ain won the Georgia Women's Team Championship on Monday.
Mary Helen McElreath of Augusta and Sandra Moody of Waynesboro finished fourth at Sea Palms Golf Resort. Elaine Montaro , also of Augusta, and Sherry Huchet of Peachtree City were ninth.
- In Villa Rica, Ga., Tommy Brannen of the Augusta Country Club tied for fifth at the E-Z-Go Georgia PGA Senior Championship, held at the Frog Golf Club at the Georgian.
Russ Davis of Cherokee Town-North won, shooting rounds of 68 and 72 for a 4-under 140 total.
- The Gloria Bush-Johnson Celebrity Golf tournament will be held Friday at the Midland Valley Country Club. A dinner and silent auction will be held Thursday.

McLaren challenges ruling at Belgian GP
McLaren has appealed the time penalty for an illegal maneuver that cost Lewis Hamilton the win at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Hamilton was demoted to third place and Felipe Massa of Ferrari wound up the winner on Sunday. Hamilton's championship lead over Massa was cut to two points.
Heat exposure may have killed UFC star
Ultimate Fighting Champion-ship star Evan Tanner has died in the desert east of San Diego.
Sheriff's Lt. George Moreno says the 37-year-old Tanner was found Monday. A preliminary coroner's report suggests Tanner died of heat exposure.
Blake dropped from U.S. Davis Cup team
James Blake was dropped from the defending champion U.S. Davis Cup team and replaced by Sam Querrey for the best-of-five series against Spain on outdoor clay Sept. 19-21 in Madrid. It was unclear why the 11th-ranked Blake was dropped.
Andy Roddick and doubles specialists Bob and Mike Bryan round out the U.S. team selected by captain Patrick McEnroe .
Pistorius races to gold in first event
In Beijing, double amputee Oscar Pistorius of South Africa won the most difficult of his three races, clocking 11.17 to take gold in the 100 meters.
