Break down barriers and help Cubans

  • Follow Letters

The poor people of Cuba are currently experiencing great hardship above what they experience on a day-to-day basis, because of the recent hurricanes.

We, as a nation, should be able to send a little more than $100,000 in aid to the suffering people of this country. What we should do, as caring American citizens wanting to provide for those who have not, is remove the sanctions and allow food, medical supplies, and trade into the country.

Yes, we have had our differences with the Castro government, but the people are the ones who have suffered, not Castro. Opening up travel to Cuba would allow American citizens to explore and enjoy this beautiful country, and supply needed economic aid to their people.

If we can spend billions of dollars every month in a country whose people don't even want us there, we can at least assist the poor people of Cuba, who would love to see American faces. Who knows? If this were to happen, and the people of Cuba experienced what democracy brings, the people may stand up and one day demand a free democratic state.

Keeping the citizens of Cuba poor, isolated, and dependent on their government is no way to free a country. Military means is surely not an option, as we have seen in the failures in Iraq. Release the grudge, let it go, for God's sake.

Michael Powell, Augusta

I'm sorry but as long as we

I'm sorry but as long as we have homeless veterans living on the streets we shouldn't send one dollar to ANY country. Nobody lines up and sends us money whenever we have problems. Get the government of Cuba to spend the money they steal from their citizens. We seem to be heading toward this "we will give money to everybody" mode. It has to stop. It's bad enough we dole out money to sorry people who wind up being baby factories and have numerous babies with numerous men. This does nothing but expand the problem. Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

You think Cubans have it bad,

You think Cubans have it bad, try eating mud cookies in Haiti as that is ALL most poor people can even hope to buy. It costs only 5 cents to you and me, but to them, it is like being rich enough to eat that day. It is made up of cooking oil (solids), dirt and salt and sold to those who can't buy rice for 60 cents per bowl.

Canada spends millions in

Canada spends millions in Cuba every year, as does central America and parts of South America. Many Europeans spend time and money in Cuba each year and in times of emergency, America sends as much aid as the Castro government will allow. They're not poor as a result of being isolated, they're poor because of being run by a socialist regime, just like Obama wants to institute here in America.

Aid has already been offered

Aid has already been offered by the U.S. Government, and the aid was REFUSED by the Cuban Government. So, they are on their own as far as I am concerned.

Do just a little research on

Do just a little research on Castro. He was a young lawyer who got into politics by promising change, hope and equality. He never defined this change and the Cuban people never questioned it. They had no fears as they had a constitution to protect them. Well, Castro has certainly kept his promises. Remember Katrina? How many boats of food did you see arriving here from Cuba? Want to help the Cuban people? Kill Castro and claim Cuba as an American Territory. Do it now while they have their hands full. Might be a great place to drop off all the illegal aliens.

I never have understood why

I never have understood why we embrace communist China with most favored nation status with the thought that through economics we may be able to change their political philosophies yet when it comes to Cuba we take exactly the opposite approach.

Movie maker Michael Moore and

Movie maker Michael Moore and other left wing loonies claim that Cuba has the best health care system in the world. Let Cuba take care of themselves and those injured and displaced from the hurricane. Obviously, from the way the Dems fawn over Cuba, the Cubans have it much better than we do in America according to them!!!
