Castroneves claims race, Dixon the title

In Joliet, Ill., Helio Castroneves won the race in the second closest finish in the history of the IndyCar Series, but it wasn't enough to stop Scott Dixon from taking his second championship.

Castroneves came from last place Sunday to win the PEAK Indy 300, but Dixon, who knew coming in he only had to finish eighth or better to win the title, took the lead with a perfect pit stop late in the race and nearly held off Castroneves for the victory, crossing the finish line 0.0033 seconds behind the winner.

Dixon came into Sunday's race with a 30-point lead and wound up winning the title and the $1 million bonus that goes with it by 17 points.

- In Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, Felipe Massa was declared the winner of the Belgian Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton was penalized for cutting a corner during a late duel with world champion Kimi Raikkonen .

The penalty demoted Hamilton to third, with BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld promoted to second.

Instead of an eight-point edge, Hamilton now leads Massa 76-74 with five races remaining, beginning with the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on Sunday.

- In Richmond, Va., Carl Edwards passed Clint Bowyer for the lead with 28 laps to go then pulled away through three restarts the rest of the way to win for the fourth time this season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and cut slightly into Bowyer's points lead.

The victory, combined with a bad night for Brad Keselowski , allowed Edwards to climb into second in the points race, but he's still 207 behind Bowyer with just seven races remaining.

Augustan wins bout at 'Battle in Burrow'

In Winder, Ga., 16-year-old Divanta Jones defeated Ceasar Basurto in the 125-pound division at the 2008 Battle in Burrow on Saturday night.

It was the first open-division, four-round fight for Jones, who is trained by his father, Albert Jones , at the Augusta Boxing Club. Jones' next fight will be Saturday in Fort Valley, Ga.

- Boxing Hall of Famer Joey Giardello , a former middleweight champion who sued filmmakers over a depiction of a title bout against Rubin "Hurricane" Carter , has died. He was 78.

Giardello died at a nursing home in Cherry Hill, N.J., on Thursday, the International Boxing Hall of Fame said in a statement. He had been suffering from congestive heart failure and diabetes, Giardello's family told the Philadelphia Inquirer .

Fallen filly honored at Kentucky Derby

In Louisville, Ky., Eight Belles was memorialized at a service held four months after the 3-year-old filly broke both front ankles moments after finishing second to Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby and was euthanized on the Churchill Downs track.

Veteran trainer Larry Jones , owner Rick Porter and more than 200 fans, some from New York and South Carolina, crammed a small courtyard outside the Kentucky Derby Museum in honor of the big gray horse.

Cavs agree to deal with rookie Jackson

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed forward Darnell Jackson on Saturday night. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Cavaliers acquired the rights to Jackson, a 22-year-old out of Kansas, from Miami during this year's NBA Draft in exchange for one of Cleveland's two second round picks in 2009.

Ward, Carr winners at putting contests

In Martinez, Greg Ward won the professional division and Vanette Block took the amateur division in Saturday's morning event at the South Putting Tour's Augusta Open.

In the afternoon event, Jeff Carr was first in the pro division, and Ben Blake won the amateur division on the Blue Course.
