Good job getting him off of the street, even though it won't be for long. Why was a 22yr.old waiting for his girl friend that is still in school. I sure hope she isn't under age...
A man was arrested Friday afternoon outside Lamar Elementary School with a loaded .22-caliber handgun tucked inside the waistband of his pants.
Omar Ahmad Gray, 22, of the 1700 block of Hicks Street in Harrisburg, was charged with possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon on school property, according to a sheriff's office report.
The gun was discovered when a school board police officer spotted four men leaning against a fence outside Lamar, Public Information Director Louis Svehla said. The officer called for backup from Tubman Middle School.
Officer Patrick Paquette responded, approaching from a back street, the report said. Mr. Gray, who was standing at a corner on school grounds, reached for his waistband and ran after seeing the officers. Officer Paquette chased after him and arrested him.
According to the report, Mr. Gray was waiting for his girlfriend, a student at the Academy of Richmond County. Lamar is on Baker Avenue across the street from Richmond Academy, where a former student was arrested last week after a sawed-off shotgun was found near campus.
Countywide, there were four guns found on school campuses last year, according to school tribunal reports.

yeah and his name wasen't "Jason or Stacy".. : )
Yeah, but her name might be Bristol or Buffy. You know they love the " Home Boys". ... :)
Don't worry reality, she is probably 20 herself--you know!
KUDOS to Patrick Paquette for doing his part to keep our kids safe!
Ditto Craig.
I know the "homeboy" lovers have a taste for feces.
You would know what feces taste like.
Omar Ahmad Gray, 22, of the 1700 block of Hicks Street we do not want you or your kind in Harrisburg. We are working to get trash like you out. Support hongkongaugustaga.org
I thought his name was gontavious.
Way to go Patrick proud of you...Stay safe out there...:-)
I don't have to say anything, actions speak louder than words...
After reading this article a few question come to my mind: The arcitle says he was charged with possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon on school property. If it was concealed -- how did they know he had the gun? Are signs posted telling people that it is school property? What happen to the other three men leaning against the fence outside Lamar? Were they charged with anything? Were they checked for guns? Why did the officer called for backup from Tubman Middle School -- why not call the Richmond Co. Sheriff. There were four men -- all four could have had guns and up to no good.
certain things are very easily seen by a trained eye ! and no one infringed on his rights, he broke the law now he can pay the price !! WAY TO GO LAW ENFORCEMENT !!! HORRAY !!!
I don't know why we bother to have courts -- with all these TRAINED EYES around. People are tried and convicted in this newspaper every day. I think it would be nice to know more about the story. There is an old saying: UNCONTROLLED POWER BECOMES CORRUPT.
An IDIOT speaks louder tahn action.
And it looks as if you have outdone yourself ....
Yes, reality you would know because it all in a name for you. You are the idiot that judges people based on their names, not I. So, you posted your true colors when you made your post. At least you are an honest bigot. If there is such a thing.
Look who is talking when it comes to judging someone because of a name or a title Hypo....Please give it a rest because quite frankly it is most tiresome to hear you and your group of little racist buddies mouthing platitudes...Go fight a fire or something else worth while puleeeze...:-)
i think bturner has a good point here, how did they know what they knew if the weapon was concealed? and what happen to the other three men? and why were there only two officeers ( board of ed officers) at that instead of richmond county's finest involved with this and why did the officer call for back up at tubman middle school for help against four men? something isn't right with that story!! and how do you get charged for a concealed weapon and posseion of a weapon ? when the charge is really possesion of a concealed weapon? you can't charge a person like that even though they were in the wrong, don't mean charge people for the same crime but in different rewording that's even more crazy!!! only in disgusta!!
OMG another one!!! That's why I deleted my comment, it's no use debating anything with people who make excuses for criminals!!!! And 2 seperate charges.... one for concealing which is its own, and another for having a weapon on school grounds. No one is rewording anything... 2 seperate charges, take time to educate yourself, take your blinders off and see reality, stop trying to justify criminal actions to validate your victim mentality you wish to continue!!!!!!! This story does have details missing but the rest you guys are confused about is common sense and I will explain it if you need. The disgusting people of Augusta who condone these criminals and leeches and the criminals and leeches themselves is what makes this town Disgusta!!!
Did Paquette "know" that the suspect had a weapon or did he "suspect" such a possession? For example, did he see the weapon, a bulge in a pocket or a behavior which is reasonably associated with weapon-possession? I don't know. I wasn't there. But I'm sure glad that Paquette was. And I'll bet that the families of kids who attend Lamar are even more glad.
Exaclty Craig, he may have suspected or thought he seen, but was not jumping to conclusions and just called for back up because there were 4 of them. The guys ran, gave chase, found out he was right. Had they not ran maybe they would have just been asked to leave the property and nothing more would have been said, but they ran becuase they knew they were up to no good and in the wrong!!! Had they called RSCD and swat and it turned out to be a cell phone or a toy gun there would be hell to pay from protesters and be the same comments on here from the same people reversed, but either way the poor little punks were the victims in their eyes and something was fishy with the cops!! It is sickening. WTG officers!!!! Oh and Craig these people commenting probably are parents... that's the scary part!!!! They are more concerned with victimizing the criminals and bad mouthing cops that they dont even care about the danger posed to the kids!!
I do NOT know this person and I am NOT saying the police did anything wrong. -- I am just asking questions as I am curious – there appeared to be a lot left out of the article. I also wonder if this person had any intent of harming anyone at the school or was this just a person that carried a gun for their own protection without the intent of hurting anyone except in self-defense, that got frighten and ran at the thought of getting caught with a hand gun on them. I also wonder if this person would have qualify for a conceal weapons permit if they took the time to apply for one. Fear makes people do irrational things – fear is turning our country into a police state. You can't walk into a courthouse without being searched. Why is everyone so afraid of question?
This was printed in yesterday's paper: "Another gun discovery reported near Richmond Academy By Greg Gelpi| Staff Writer Friday, September 05, 2008 4:38 p.m. School board police arrested someone with a loaded handgun outside of the Academy of Richmond County at about 3 this afternoon, according to Director of Public Information Louis Svehla. An officer noticed a crowd gathering near the campus and drove by to disperse it, Mr. Svehla said. A person in the crowd ran, and the officer gave chase. When apprehended, he was found with a loaded handgun. Details are still sketchy, the spokesman said. The name of the suspect, who appeared to be an adult and not a student, hasn’t been released. The incident occurred about 30 minutes after the school’s dismissal. Last week, a former ARC student was arrested in connection with a sawed-off shotgun found near the school’s campus. Reach Greg Gelpi at (706) 828-3851 or greg.gelpi@augustachronicle.com From the Friday, September 05, 2008 online edition of The Augusta Chronicle." This article does not say anthing about them being on school property.
Yeah that old I ran becuase I was scared bit is used quite frequently when the guilty party is caught.LOL Fear isn't turning our country into a police state, the [filtered word] criminals are!!IMO Not afraid of a question and wouldn't have though half as much about it had it not been for the 12:01 response, though it struck me as an odd post from you from the beginning. I evidently am not the only one who read your first post as defensive. then on top of it ladie's crazy post. so that's 3 who kinda read something more into your post, than just curious questions towards an incomplete article. Sorry but that's how it read.
BTurner, an officer calls for backup when they are outnumbered. It was four to one. Next, once one person runs, the focus is on him/her. The "concealed" weapon then becomes the issue. They must be searched for safety purposes. The other three probably didn't stay at the fence to wait on the officer to return so that was likely the reason only one person was addressed. Also, the article stated that the school was across from another school. Also, don't forget that children/students are not always as challenged (educationally) as you and I were. I believe the cut-off age is close to 55 now to complete the requirements for a high school diploma. And then most can't pass the exit exam.
prolifer, I think your assessment is probably correct. When a GUN was discovered it became a big story and the media wanted information fast. Did you notice the article written on the 5th -- it almost sounds like a different incident.
Sounds similar to me, that's also why it said details are still sketchy!! What exactly is your point? That the news isn't reporting complete facts or are you trying to dig something for a set up or police cover up? I still don't get it. One said crowd, follow up said 4, one said officer drove by, one said he called back up, one guy ran was chased and gun found both said. all outside of ARC both said one pinpointing location more. What is so entriely different? The first was quick report, details are sketchy means they aren't sure about them. Sorry, I do not see your point.
TakeAstand, take a seat, I don’t think the police officer did anything wrong – if I were a police officer and I approach someone and they ran – I would chase them too. When I found a gun with out a concealed weapons permit – I would have to charge them. It appears to me the newspaper is trying to play up a gun problem in the local schools. I do have a problem with the gun laws. I think if a person without a criminal record legally buys a handgun. They should have the right to carry it concealed without a license. With technology the way it is the police know if someone has a criminal record when they stop them. If this young man bought this gun legally and does not have a criminal record – I think it is ashamed for him to become one over this.
