BREWERS: Signed third baseman Mike Lamb , hoping to bolster their roster for the final month of the season.
A nine-year veteran who has played for Texas, Houston and Minnesota, Lamb hit .233 with one homer and 32 RBI in 81 games with the Twins this year. He was released Thursday after being designated for assignment and won't be eligible for Milwaukee's postseason roster if the Brewers advance to the playoffs for the first time since 1982.
The 33-year-old gives the slumping Brewers another option for third along with Bill Hall , Craig Counsell , Joe Dillon , Mat Gamel and Vinny Rottino . Russell Branyan went on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 14 because of an oblique strain.
CUBS: Ace Carlos Zambrano has right rotator cuff tendinitis and inflammation, an MRI confirmed, a blow to Chicago's chances of winning the World Series for the first time in a century.
Zambrano received a shot of anti-inflammatory medication and hopes to return to the rotation next week.
CARDINALS: Jason Isringhausen , twice demoted from St. Louis' closer role last month before landing on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain, will have season-ending surgery next week.
Red Sox: Got three key players back Friday, activating right-hander Josh Beckett , third baseman Mike Lowell and first baseman Sean Casey from the 15-day disabled list.
WHITE SOX: AL home run leader Carlos Quentin has a broken wrist, and the left fielder will have surgery Monday that could sideline him for the rest of the season.
Rangers: All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler will have season-ending surgery to repair a sports hernia.
Kinsler last played Aug. 17, and an MRI the following day revealed the injury. The team said Friday he will have surgery next week.
- Left fielder Marlon Byrd left Friday night's game against Boston after spraining his left thumb while attempting to make a diving catch. X-rays were negative. The team said Byrd was day-to-day.
ORIOLES: Announced they will bring manager Dave Trembley back next season, exercising an option that was the contract he signed last year. The club also added a team option for 2010.
- Acquired help for their beleaguered pitching staff, getting minor leaguer Brian Bass from Minnesota for a player to be named or cash.
