Driver leaves boy, 9, on bus

  • Follow Metro

A stranger came to the rescue of a Richmond County pupil who was left on a bus earlier this week, Public Information Director Louis Svehla said Thursday.

The 9-year-old Glenn Hills Elementary third-grader fell asleep in the back of the bus on Tuesday, Mr. Svehla said. The bus driver didn't see the child on the bus when she returned home.

When the child awoke, he wasn't sure where he was, got off the bus and wandered the neighborhood, the school spokesman said. A stranger passing by noticed the boy, asked where he needed to be and offered him a ride to school.

Class starts at 8:30 a.m. The child arrived at 11 a.m.

Mr. Svehla did not identify the bus driver, the child or the stranger.

Mr. Svehla said he did not know how long the child was asleep or how long he walked the streets of the neighborhood.

Making the situation more difficult, Mr. Svehla said, is that the child is an English as a Second Language pupil.

School board policy requires drivers check buses before disembarking, Mr. Svehla said, and an internal investigation is under way on why the child was missed.

Failure to follow board policy could be a fireable offense, he said.

The driver of more than 10 years remains on the job while she is being investigated.

"School board policy requires drivers check buses before disembarking, Mr. Svehla said, and an internal investigation is under way on why the child was missed."
Well, then....the driver should be fired, thats that.

patriciathomas

The policy is clear and the driver was negligent and derelict. A cursory look in the mirror to see if everyone is off is checking the bus. Not a good job of checking the bus, but still within board guidelines. If the policy was to walk the length of the bus, looking between each seat before disembarking, then the violation would be clear. The child is okay and safe, no harm, no foul. The bus driver (difficult to replace) will be reprimanded and all will be well.

Reality

Thanks for whoever helped the boy, the bus driver should be fired obvious oversight on her part. What is English as a second language all about, this is the USA....

ibewalkintomemphis

English as a second language, wtf??????? What is this country coming to??? Sounds like nobama has already been prez for quite some time.

pantherluvcik

What the h@ll does that have to do with Obama, what an idiot. Everyone who lives here was not born here, so if they are from another country and speak their native language, then English would be their second language. You people take every unrelated possible chance to take shots at Obama. You closet racists can't fathom a black President can you, deal with it. A change is coming. And thank God that the stranger was a decent citizen and not one of these pedophiles we have so many of. She should be fired, I would be [filtered word] if that was my child. Obama Obama Obama!!!!!!!!!

angie611

Only in Richmond Cty. Just joking.

ibewalkintomemphis

Hey aholes, if he is in America, English should be his FIRST language!!!! Probably the child of an illegal. PRESS ONE FOR ENGLISH, IDIOTS!

karmakills123

Where was the bus parked?..

Does_it_really_matter

What the hell does this have to do with Obama? It is about a bus driver that shorted her responsibility and didn't do a walk-through of the bus. It doesn't matter what language the child spoke, she was left asleep on the bus when the driver should have checked. End of story.

christian134

Fire the bus driver and thank God above the driver who gave the child a ride was a good person and not a killer pervert...This could have had disastrous results...

PT, Good comment at 5:14am. I see that one butt hole is up early starting his B.S.

This is not the first time that a child has been left on a bus either here in Richmond County or across America. Seems to me that a bus driver of 10 years would know that this could happen and would use their good sense to walk down the aisle of the bus to check. I can not believe that PT can make the statement that since the child was not hurt there is no harm no foul!!!! The reason we put in place rules and guidelines to follow is so that people won't be harmed. Having a 9 year old child roaming the streets and the possibilitis that conjurs up is most definately a foul. The driver should be fired. Period.

ANNOITED1

okay this is not a hard one: the bus driver did not check the bus..the bus driver should be fired! end of discussion!

ibewalkintomemphis

does it really, it was a he not a she, press 1 for english!

Haddock

Has anybody heard of to forgive is devine? The child is safe. We need all the bus drivers on the job to transport the children. I think the bus driver should be given another chance but warned of a second incident with dismissal.

christian134

Forgive is good Haddock and this person can be forgiven but should not be allowed to drive a bus or have the responsibility for children ever again...It take a second for a person to come along and harm a child...The child has to come first...They are the priority..

Haddock

christian134 I agree with you about the kids being our top priority, maybe the driver could be place someplace else on the job without being terminated. I was just thinking maybe the driver has a family to support and I know how hard jobs are to come by now. I hate to see anyone struggle who is trying to work. There are so many out here unemployed and want work.

shamehere

This driver will not be fired. Richmond County is in to much need of bus drivers to let this one go. I have been in a situation where I have needed to confront both the driver of the bus and the BOE transportation on their choice of drivers. The curse our kids, they drive reckless and no one cares. As long as we have a driver. Richmond County Sucks when it comes to children. Lets give it up for the higher ups instead of those who will take their place in the future.

CKB

The bus driver is someone the school board has put in a position to protect children and it is totally above her abilities. No questions asked, she did not do her job for this child to be left on the bus. Need we point out the risk and danger SHE put this child in? Thank heavens the child is safe, but there are some neighborhoods that we as adults would be scared to be in- and this is a child. The BOE should be very happy this was not my child- I would OWN them when I finished. If the board is TRULY concerned about the safety of our children, they would do the right thing and fire this idiot. She has no place with young children. I am so relieved that this child is safe and unharmed. We have more than our share of sex offenders and perverts and I am glad they were not nearby for this child to be harmed. Obviously we need to watch this story! Haddock, jobs are hard to find, which should make employeed persons do their very best everyday to not only do the job to their very best ability, but to also KEEP their job. This bus driver scares the heck out of me to think she should ever be allowed to be around children where she has any responsibility again! I hope she is history!!!

I4PUTT

Was English a second language for the driver? Had the bus been modified in any way? Was there a grassy noll where the bus had been parked with the alleged child who conveniently was not named? Were any explosives found on the bus? Does the driver have a military background with emphasis on special ops? There is too much info not provided here to be sure this was not an intentional act. Based on the information that was provided however I agree with PT.

No_Longer_Amazed

It looks as if there are some posters who want to pick and choose what rules/regulations they want to follow. "The bus driver didn't see the child on the bus when she returned home." What was the driver doing taking the bus home? "School board policy requires drivers check buses before disembarking." So why did the driver not follow this policy? "The driver of more than 10 years remains on the job." Why was the driver not fired IMMEDIATELY like the 'peeping Tom' who at least didn't endanger the life of a child? By the way, isn't his wife a RCBOE school bus driver?

to tell the truth1

I am not surprised at all. That happened to my child once when he was in elementary school. My child was taken to the RC transportation lot near Augusta Tech still asleep when I called and he was finally rescued. There was and probably still is a driver that was always late with personal problems and the children had to be taken to school by other means. I called several times and nothing was ever done. She continued to be late or the schedule was still behind until a sub driver was summoned even to end of the school year. To this day I continue to see school bus drivers talking on cell phones in hand, making bad traffic decisions.

smoothcaramel300

Are you guys smarter than a 5th grader? I think NOT!

gvoicinganopinion

There is a simple solution to this problem. The bus driver should be terminated - as a bus driver. If that were my child on that bus, I would be at the board demanding some justice. Anything could have happened to that child. And for those of you out there- forgive and forget- whatever, you must not have children. I would flip out on someone. Examples should be made of this situation. I remember last year there was another situation involving a child and a bus driver. Don't get me wrong I appreciate the bus drivers. We need them. But we also need them to do their job. All the time... not just part of it.

stillamazed

I doubt the driver will be fired but he or she should be. This could have ended up alot worse and I agree with Christian134. It could have been any pervert who picked this child up or what if he had kept wondering and got lost in the woods? I am thankfulthis child is safe.

happythoughts

Have you noticed the "sleep issue" exists alot. Most of the time when somthing bad happens someone is sleeping in the daytime. Why don't people get proper sleep at night? I bet the driver rushed home to get some more daytime sleep too. This boy needs to go to bed earlier since he's the only one asleep on the bus. Mother????

newtothegame

Can anybody testify to seeing this kid asleep on the bus? I'm just curious. If he really did fall asleep on the bus, maybe he should close the English book and get to bed.

to tell the truth1

Happy thoughts, the sleep issue doesn't have a thing to do with a driver that DOESN'T check their bus at the end of their route.. Some children are on medications, etc. I'll excuse your post for your "LIMITED' observation.

nino512

Finally some realiize that there is more to this problem than the bus driver. Why are the kids even falling asleep on the bus. Is maybe because whats going on at HOME.
