Clemson will be without starting defensive linemen Ricky Sapp and junior backup Jamie Cumbie against The Citadel on Saturday.

The school said Thursday that Sapp, a junior defensive end, is still recovering from a bruised knee in Clemson's 34-10 loss to Alabama last Saturday and would not play.

Cumbie broke his left wrist against the Crimson Tide. He'll have surgery on Monday and will be out the rest of the season. Cumbie is eligible for a medical redshirt and could play in 2009 and 2010.

Clemson coach Tommy Bowden says freshman Brandon Thompson would be used at defensive tackle.

OHIO STATE: Coach Jim Tressel said tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells will not play when the third-ranked Buckeyes take on Ohio on Saturday.

Wells injured his right foot in last weekend's 43-0 victory over Youngstown State. He has not practiced with the team this week and has spent much of the time wearing a protective boot.

Asked whether he worries that Wells might not be available when the Buckeyes play at No. 1 Southern Cal on Sept. 13, Tressel added: "No, not at all. Not at all. But that's easy to say today."

GAME ON: East Carolina's game with West Virginia is still set for Saturday, but athletic director Terry Holland is asking some fans to change the way they park outside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Holland said Thursday that all parking lots will open at 1:30 p.m. -- three hours before the scheduled kickoff time -- to allow drainage in case Tropical Storm Hanna causes localized flooding.

Tents and two cookers will be prohibited from the lots in case of space limitations. Holland also is encouraging fans to carpool to lessen congestion.

PENN STATE: Coach Joe Paterno said backup defensive back Willie Harriott has been kicked off the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Paterno says defensive linemen Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma , and tight end Andrew Quarless will sit out when Oregon State visits 19th-ranked Penn State on Saturday. He said on his Thursday night radio show that he's still gathering information on a recent off-field incident.

CINCINNATI: Former Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk testified Thursday that a foot injury prevented him from playing or even practicing at times during his freshman season in 2003 at Wake Forest, where he played before transferring to Cincinnati.

Mauk should be granted a sixth year of eligibility and that the NCAA has been unwilling to listen to Mauk's arguments, attorney Kevin Murphy told Hardin County Judge William Hart .

Hart on Thursday turned down the NCAA's request to dismiss the case, and it was unclear when he would decide on Mauk's request for a permanent injunction that would allow him to play.

KENTUCKY: Left tackle Garry Williams will miss the next two to three weeks because of a cartilage tear in his knee. Coach Rich Brooks made the announcement after Thursday's practice. Williams had surgery Thursday morning to repair the tear.

TENNESSEE: Has scheduled a two-game series against Connecticut starting 2015. The Vols will travel to Connecticut on Sept. 26, 2015, two weeks after they're scheduled to play host to Oklahoma.
