In her many years as part of the Friends of the Symphony, Sue Alexanderson has seen how the organization's outreach programs foster a love of music in young children.
"We've seen children take up instruments and major in music in college," Mrs. Alexanderson said.
A major outreach event is the 17th annual Instrument Petting Zoo, set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Morris Museum of Art.
Children will get to learn more about the instruments and play them. Portman's Music and Jay's Music and Super Sound System will bring percussion, brass and woodwind instruments for the event, and some Augusta Symphony musicians will bring their instruments as well.
This is the second year the Friends of the Symphony has combined the petting zoo with the Morris Museum of Art's monthly Artrageous! program.
Children will be able to make their own musical instruments through the Artrageous! portion of the program, Mrs. Alexanderson said.
The event will also include musical performances by Langford Middle School pupils and I Drum 2 U.
The event is free. For more information, call (706) 826-4705.
