Tourists capitalize on Jackets' errors

In Asheville, N.C., the host Tourists took advantage of three Augusta errors to score a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and beat the GreenJackets 7-6 Saturday night.

Angel Villalona hit a two-run homer for the GreenJackets, who committed four errors on the night and had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Lady Jaguars split volleyball matches

In Jefferson City, Tenn., Augusta State split two volleyball matches in the Carson-Newman Labor Day Tournament for the second day in a row.

The Lady Jaguars (2-2) lost 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 27-25 to Mount Olive before defeating West Vir-ginia Wesleyan 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21.

Amy Hunt led Augusta State with 14 kills against Mount Olive, while Jessica Howard had a team-high 16 kills and six blocks against West Virginia Wesleyan.

- In Savannah, Ga., Erika Harvey scored two goals to lead West Georgia to a 3-0 win over USC Aiken in the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirate Soccer Shootout.

- In Aiken, Eckerd scored two second-half goals to break a tie and held on to beat USC Aiken 4-3 in a men's soccer match.

Reuben Ojeyinka , Fernando Gomez and Amr Hailat scored goals for USC Aiken (0-2).

- In Fort Jackson, S.C., USC Aiken finished fourth in the six-team college division of the USC Gamecock Invitational cross coun-try meet.

Sophomore Nicole Maitland placed fifth out of 41 participants in 20 minutes, 57.57 seconds.

Curlin earns fourth victory of the year

In Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Curlin won the $500,000 Woodward Stakes to move a step closer to defending his Horse of the Year title, beating long-shot Past the Point by 11/4 lengths at Saratoga Race Course.

The $300,000 winner's share moved Curlin past Skip Away as the second-leading money winning thoroughbred in history with more than $9.79 million, leaving him less than $200,000 behind Cigar ($9.9 million).

Ridden by Robby Albarado , Curlin ran 1e miles in 1:49.34 in en route to his fourth victory in five starts this year.

Valuev claims WBA heavyweight crown

In Berlin, Russia's Nikolai Valuev won the WBA heavyweight championship, using his left jab to outpoint John Ruiz in a split decision.

Two of the judges scored it for Valuev, 116-113 and 116-111, while the third gave the fight to Ruiz, 114-113.

Olympic medalist is banned for life

Olympic heptathlete Lyudmila Blonska , of Ukraine, received a lifetime ban for a positive doping test after winning the silver medal at the Beijing Games.

The Ukrainian national athletics federation made the decision after Blonska tested positive for the steroid methyltestosterone -- her second doping offense.

Blonska was expelled from the Games and her medal was officially revoked.

Cycling

Zabriskie captures third title in a row

In Greenville, S.C., David Zabriskie won his third consecutive USA Cycling professional time trial championship.

Zabriskie completed the course in 40 minutes, 39.40 seconds, finishing 5 seconds ahead of runner-up Tom Zirbel , of Boulder, Colo.

Pioneer dies from heart attack at 81

Pro wrestling pioneer Walter "Killer" Kowalski has died from a heart attack. He was 81.

He became famous for various moves, including a stomach vice grip called the "Killer Clutch."
