Chorale wants to add voices to productions

By the end of last season, the University of South Carolina Aiken Masterworks Chorale had about 45 singers.

The group's director would like to see that number increase.

"I've love to have between 80 and 90 voices," said Joel Scraper, a USC Aiken professor who directs the chorale. "We need all parts. We'd always love to have more men."

Rehearsals for the ensemble will begin Sept. 8 at USC Aiken's rehearsal hall in the Etherredge Center. They are held each Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Members of the Masterworks Chorale have varied backgrounds, said Dr. Scraper.

"Some are music teachers, church musicians. They are people who love to sing," he said. "Some are music-education students; others are from all over campus."

The Masterworks Chorale will perform three times this year. The holiday concert will be on Dec. 14; a Valentine's concert will be on Feb. 14; and the spring concert will be in April.

Dr. Scraper said he's looking forward to this season and is excited about the first rehearsal of the year. For more information, call (803) 641-3306 or e-mail joels@usca.edu.
