Nomination was moving experience

  • Follow Letters

It was one of the greatest moments I had experienced. I was moved with joy and tears when Sen. Hillary Clinton nominated Sen. Barack Obama by acclamation, as the Democratic presidential nominee.

I only had one wish at the time: that my wife and parents had been alive to share the moment. They often talked about this day coming, and always encouraged young people to study and work hard and be ready for the moment when the doors opened.

This door has opened, and again, I am proud of my country and hope to see the day -- Jan. 20, 2009 -- when Obama is inaugurated as president of our great country.

This is a down-payment for all who fought for this day -- too many to name, but not too many to be honored.

We need Democrats to restore and rebuild our country because it has been dismantled the past seven-plus years.

Only Democrats can restructure and reinstate our great country so that it will become productive, competitive and respectful among the world's nations. We need to solve our current problems and meet the challenges we will face in the future.

We need visionary leadership and only Democrats can provide it, with Obama as the leader.

Research shows that for the past 45 years, our country has thrived more under Democratic administrations. A huge number of people moved into the middle class, and poverty was drastically reduced. We were more respected among nations, and our national debt was greatly reduced.

I would hope more Southerners would become a part of the union, and not be brainwashed as their forefathers were by slaveholders 150 years ago. Republicans have used them for their votes only. Vote for Obama.

Our nation is in trouble on two fronts, and we must restore our leadership in the world and our American dream at home.

Yes, Barack Obama can!

It has been a long time coming for a black to be nominated by a major party to run for Predident of the United States. My only concern now is that the country require an accounting of his grasp of the issues and what he will do to help the entire country along and not just vote for him because he is the first one. First does not always mean best.

GnipGnop

Yeah when I watched it I almost had to have a movement. You need to reread your history. Just as many Northerners owned slaves as Southerners. In fact Lincoln thought blacks were less human than whites and wanted them shipped off to Liberia. The only reason he wanted the slaves freed (and only down south I might add) is because he was losing sympathy in a long bloody and costly war. Try and do a little research before you stereotype a group of people. You wouldn't want me saying all blacks live on public assistance anymore than I would want to be lumped in as a brainwashed slavery loving southerner. Oh and by the way. Before I am labeled as a racist I will tell you I have not yet made up my mind which way I will vote. See, unlike a lot of people, I want to see how the candidates stack up against each other. I want to see debates and hear about their goals and plans. Once informed then I will make my decision.

sjgraci

How anyone does not know where the candidates stand, and what their goals and plans are is beyond me. Harder to fathom is how anyone can not know where they themselves stand on the issues. I have news for you, McSame's policies are the same as Bush's. Obama's policies are the same as the Democrats. The differences between each candidate's views and those of his party are miniscule. As for the letter, I agree.

GnipGnop

Spoken like someone that will vote for a party rather than a candidate.

As It Is

I would take Alan Keys any day but Obama, give me a break. As for us needing democrats in office, yeah, we really need national health care because if I were a doctor, I should have to treat you for nearly nothing because you are owed something from the momeny you were born. And as a working American, I should pay more taxes for those who are less fortunate (is: made poor decisions their whole life) and want me to pay for their misery and failure through section 8 housing, welfare, food stamps, tax credits, etc. This country really needs the democrats so we can take from the working, give to the masses and greatly reduce national security.

Reality

Time will tell..Do you like him because of his half black heritage or because you agree with his policies that we aren't privy to yet??? My parents also warned me of this day coming, so I will vote for the best candidate.

pauldrake

as it is yes we have some sorry people in this country who wouldn't work in a pie factory squirting happy barmitzvah on cakes for a living, but what do you do? they are sorry and we're stuck with them.if you don't help them then they just steal, rob, and harm innocent people.the taxpayers such as myself get shafted every way we turn, got any solutions?i do.stop sending aid to countries all around the world for sitting on their behinds all day.we've given pakistan over 5 billion for looking for binladen.isn't that what our special forces are supposed to be doing?how about the 1/2 trillion spent in iraq?wasted money that could be invested here.

patriciathomas

Yes, I can see where blacks are proud of a black man running for president. I just don't see how joining the socialist parade makes America a better country. I guess I just wasn't brought up to believe the government should be my nanny from the cradle to the grave. What were my parents thinking, teaching me that individual responsibility was the only way of life. What line do I get in to get all of the 'free' stuff?

ZenoElia

Hey PT, become a dislocated worker due to job going overseas, then apply for food stamps and get denied for having an extra auto or boat or vacation property, then when your unemployment runs out, start working your cons to steal from unsuspecting victims. If that doesn't work you could always commit a felony and get in the prison food lines. Free stuff my big butt. Somebody pays for it. And if you're not working, can't find a job, get disabled w/o benefits, and get your home repo'd maybe you can hustle in the streets like so many of the poor do to eek out a daily meal and shelter. You'd probably make a good living being so perfectly endowed with higher intelligence. I'm sure you could profit off the uneducated 25% of poor folks in A-RC. Most of the Columbia Co residents already have. Free stuff. HAH!

patriciathomas

Zeno, the party will disavow you talking like that. If Obama gets to be king, all will be good.

ZenoElia

If OB is king, who becomes the whore of Babylon? What party? I wasn't invited.

PT - Being King is Good. Eveyone under the King will pay out the nose. In this case the King is Robin Hood and will steal from the rich and give to the lazy.

sigraci....."Harder to fathom is how anyone can not know where they themselves stand on the issues." Is that like saying your stance on abortion is "above your paygrade?"

factchecker

SA - Yes was that not a rallying cry? Sounds like the typical whole life government worker - "It's not in my job description." Or "Close enough for government work." Boy what a "CHANGE" we will have. Go MCCAIN/PALIN 08 & 12!!!

teharper428

Patricia- Apparently you didn't read or listen to Sen. Obama's acceptance speech. He's not advocating "cradle to grave" gov't assistance. Here's just a small portion and google for his entire speech: "It's a promise that says the market should reward drive and innovation and generate growth, but that businesses should live up to their responsibilities to create American jobs, look out for American workers, and play by the rules of the road.

Ours is a promise that says government cannot solve all our problems, but what it should do is that which we cannot do for ourselves -- protect us from harm and provide every child a decent education; keep our water clean and our toys safe; invest in new schools and new roads and new science and technology.

Our government should work for us, not against us. It should help us, not hurt us. It should ensure opportunity not just for those with the most money and influence, but for every American who's willing to work.

That's the promise of America -- the idea that we are responsible for ourselves, but that we also rise or fall as one nation; the fundamental belief that I am my brother's keeper; I am my sister's keeper."

Let's talk first about the historical significance of this nomination. I am delighted to finally see this, a black or any other minority chosen to lead a major party in the bid for the White House. This could not have happened just one generation ago. I'm truly proud. I just don't get Senator Obama. Why would we choose him? He still has no experience. He has not done anything noteworthy in the senate. He has questionable ties to terrorists, favors Marxist teachings, readily talks about stealing profits from successful companies for the government, wants to rape the wealthy to pay for the poor, has a Robin Hood mentality, wants to end the war in Iraq despite all the good that has come of it, and constantly derides American citizens. He delivers a speech really well when someone writes it for hin, but when asked spontaneous questions he stutters like a fool. I've said this before, IMHO he seems like an empty suit with lots of charisma. After seeing the DNC, I will definitely vote for McCain 08

Never be proud of a man or a party that promotes the killing of babies. That blood is on the hands of every voter and creates the very struggle that voting for them was supposed to remove. Keep repeating that vote and the struggle will never go away. All battles are won and lost in the spiritual before you see the results in the natural. Win the battle by not voting for those who kill the children. Vote for life instead of death and I think you break a curse and will see improvement in your life.

Everyone that I talk to is very excited about the possibility of having new leadership in Washington after been without any for the past eight years. A new day is dawning. Fox news was speechless after Obama's laid out his program. They twisted and turned trying to find criticism. We all need to work hard to get out the vote for Obama so he will be sworn in in Jan. I am as proud as the Augusta Chronicle. We might not see this again in our lifetime afther the next 8 years. We can leave this earth knowing, we saw it in our life time and we can tell our children we were part of it. We can make amends for the times we stood silent and watched so much injustices take place in our great nation. But, even better than that - Obama seems to be the best choice. As always, have a blessed day and be part of history.

jack234

Give mine to the poor if they need it. Why should I have money stored up in the bank that I don't need and there are children and the elderly without the necessities of life. I don't know about the creation of a socialist state. Last time I checked, our government still has "check and balances" I don't see how we are able to tolerate what we have had for the past 8 years and say nothing but defend it and at the same time be critical of what might or might not happen if Obama is elected. We know what the past 8 years have been like, Obama can only offer hope for a better future. Personally, I don't fear the future. I'm too busy regretting the past. As always, you have a blessed day.

factchecker

Ya'll have a blessed day, I'm going shopping to store up on food and other necessities before Obama gets a chance to take away all I worked for just to give it to someone too lazy to work for their own.

convertedsoutherner

Remember that saying. Ask not what my country can do for me but what I can do for my country. Saying barack hussein obama-carter laid out his plans is one thing, but he didn't say how he plans to pay for ALL those plans.

convertedsoutherner

Also, remember this man thinks there are 57 states!!!

I4PUTT

Converted, he is actually right. He was including the terroritories in this count. Guam, N. Marriana Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, American Somoa, Baker Islands, Howland Islands, Jarvis Islands, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Bajo Nuevo Bank, Serranilla Bank, Midway Island, Navassa Island, and Wake Atoll. See....

One last thought for today -
I was talking to a friend of mine's little girl the other day. I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied, "I want to be President!" Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there. So then I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?" She replied, "I'd give houses to all the homeless people." "Wow - what a worthy goal." I told her, "You don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward a new house." Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds. While her Mom glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?" And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party." Her folks still aren't talking to me.

factchecker

I4PUTT - If he was including the territories (which, by the way are NOT states) then his count was still off by the list of territories you provided.

SisterAbdullahX_

Nice way to rationalize a gaff i4putt. So he just doesn't know what a "State" is. Is that any better?

brimisjoshan

I will have to say that I was moved by his speech also. I spent the next hour in the bathroom. LOL All kidding aside I am glad that our nation has got to a point that we can look past a man's color to vote for him for president. However, Obama should not be that man. He is wrong for America. Many other strong black men could better lead our country.

patriciathomas

teharper, I not only listened to the speech, I understood what he was saying. When he said it was the responsibilities of the business to create the jobs he meant that if things weren't the way he liked them, he'd take from the productive to give to the non-productive. Some how he doesn't realize the business of business is making money. What his speech was about was deciding who gets the money the business makes. Karl Marx would be proud. I'm offended, but then, I don't care what color I'm voting for. I vote for or against the message.

patriciathomas

Dontwantademocrat, your 9:49 post was just plain mean and I wouldn't be surprised to see it removed for violation of policy. (wink, wink)

Bizarro

I still can't believe that people applauded Obama when he stated he would raise taxes on the top 1% of income earners. The top 1% are families who earn over 250,000 a year. The 2005 economic survey revealed the income distribution for households and individuals whereby the top 5% of individuals had six figure incomes (exceeding $100,000) and the top 10% of individuals had incomes exceeding $75,000.The top 1.5% of households had incomes exceeding $250,000, the top 0.12%, having incomes exceeding $1,600,000 annually. With Obama's plan the top 1% will be paying 80% of taxes so 1 million people will pay more than the 138 million who will reap the benefit-wealth redistribution. In 2003, the most-earning 1% of the population in the United States paid over 34% of the nation's federal income tax; the most-earning 10% bore 66% of the total tax load; the top 25% of income earners paid 84% of the income taxes; and the upper half accounted for virtually the entire U.S. income tax revenue (nearly 97%). So if you make over 250,000 dollars a year you already lose 30-40 of your income to the govt. Obama will raise that to 50-60%. What incentive do these top earners have to work-none. Obviously that is his plan to destroy the classes and have state control-marxism. I predict a mass exodus of the most educated, intelligent, and productive people out of this country. Industry has already moved out.
