A surprise choice, well-timed

Can two mavericks form a herd?

Sen. John McCain's surprising choice for vice president, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, appears to be every bit the maverick he is. A dyed-in-the-wool conservative, Palin nonetheless made her considerable Alaska reputation by taking on establishment politicians -- even bringing ethics charges against fellow Republicans.

She's clearly a rising star in Republican politics -- a hunter, National Rifle Association member, pro-life mother of five, one of those offspring serving in Iraq.

Her weakness, like Barack Obama's, is her relatively thin resume. She was a councilwoman and mayor before becoming governor in 2006.

No, she's not the presidential nominee as Obama is; she's second on the ticket. What will the opposition say? "Yes, she's fresh and exciting, but is she really ready to attend foreign funerals?"

Still, experience will likely be the flash point in the vice-presidential battle.

Mitt Romney might have been a safer choice. He became the conservatives' choice by default in the primary, and has both gubernatorial and business experience. He helped save the 2002 Olympics, for example. And he would have been an articulate champion for McCain -- though some worried his Mormonism would alienate evangelical Christians.

We liked Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, too -- perhaps the most articulate young conservative on the political stage today.

John McCain likes to confound expectations, though. And few truly expected this choice.

He did need someone young and dynamic to diversify the ticket age-wise. And conservatives -- whom McCain has had a difficult relationship with over the years -- should be encouraged by the choice of Palin.

Fears had grown that McCain might tap friend and longtime Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman. Conservatives will be relieved he didn't -- but will still welcome Lieberman's principled and enthusiastic support of the Republican ticket.

And McCain's choice shrewdly steals some of the "historic" brand that Obama's candidacy had etched out for itself. This will be the first time a woman has a reasonable chance to become vice president, given that the Walter Mondale/Geraldine Ferraro ticket of 1984 never had a chance against Ronald Reagan.

McCain's timing was exquisite, as well: Just hours after Obama's biggest speech ever, at least to an American audience, news media were abuzz with frenzied talk of the McCain VP selection. And the campaign kept a remarkable lid on his choice.

The lid's off. The race is on.

The timing was great. Obama's historic speech, 38 million viewers. Then a bombshell out of left field from McCain. I burst out loud when I read it. I was afraid he was going to pick a solid experienced leader for VP and make it a close race. Instead he picked a mooseburger eating LL Bean wearing totally inexperienced woman from Alaska. McCain chose going for Hillary's votes over our country's national security should he die in office. After months of saying "he's not ready", McCain picks someone even less ready. Obama's in trouble now, because everyone knows you can't fight 'crazy'. And John, that was just plain crazy. Not to mention irresponsible.

A Rash, Reactionary, Risky, Desperate, Pandering, Token choice. Are there really no better Republican women/men available for the job? Great judgement in your first Executive decision John McSame. Obama is the next President of the United States.

you got that right cyou299! mcsenile is at the top of his game.everyone is scared of mcsenile having his hand anywhere near the nuclear button, now we have a nobody from nowhere who would be second in line, and pelosi behind her if the nut dies.you talk about scary! atleast nancy dresses nice, and keeps her appearance up,maybe she will teach sarah some tips on her hair style, maybe bring it in to atleast the 20th century anyway.

I like the fact that Ms. Palin has actively fought both Republican & Democratic corruption. I really like the fact she is NOT Joe. I just wonder if it is fair to her child with down syndrom to be taking on the job of Vice President, I know how much effort my wife had in raising our childeren & she is a stay at home mother.

Attending foreign funerals? McCain is 72 years old and has a history of melanoma. There's a good chance he won't make it through a full term. He's been attacking Obama on lack of experience but now has a VP candidate (a heartbeat away from the presidency) who was a mayor of a town about the size of Cartersville, Ga. , and less than two years as Governor of Alaska. This will totally eliminate the experience argument.

"Rash, Reactionary, Risky, Desperate, Pandering, Token choice".....sounds like obama............................

The fact that an honest, honorable, successful and attractive woman was chosen for McCains running mate has driven the wacked left to almost total distraction. The largest production of a political speech, one sure to win an award for "best of show", was bumped off the radar screen the morning after by the surprise pick of a virtual unknown, and a conservative. Her acceptance speech was as informative and reassuring as Obama's was exciting and vacuous. She's now the only one of the four candidates with any executive leadership experience and the only one to have run a business. While she hasn't been a government employee as long as McCain or Biden, unlike Obama, she has experience in fields other then government employment. She's proven to be a reformer that follows the law instead of party affiliation. A true conservative in practice as well as in name. The next two months will show the nation if she can stand the heat, because she will surely be tested under fire. The attacks on her began moments after she was announced as v.p. and won't let up before Nov. 4th. Let the fun begin!!!

Wow, Patricia! Well said. I kinda wish we were the same person as silly-q suggests and I'd have been able to write such a post. I still have serious problems with Sen McCain, but the other viable option is unpalatable.

Does_it_really_matter

If attending State Funerals is the only tough thing she has to do in four years, she will be lucky! People have a way of living up or down to our expectations. Trust me, if she didn't think she could handle it, she would not have agreed to accept the position.

Executive experience? 20 whole months as governor. This was a gimmick choice just like Ferraro. It just shows McCain has flip-flopped again on what few principles he still had. All of a sudden it doesn't matter if a person is "ready" for the presidency. Also, Obama's speech won't soon be forgotten. Right after the speech, Faux News cut to Karl Rove and he looked like he just made doodie in his pants.

jsterett

sjgraci sounds like a bad case of "sour grapes". The Palin choice was nothing less than a politically brilliant move but she also appears to be a true woman of substance. While B.Ho is tryin to paint himself as some kind of political messiah I hope that Sarah will prove to be a "Proverbs 31" type of woman.

patriciathomas

Tech, your lack of comprehension is showing. Not a lot of executive experience, just a lot more then Obama. Also v.p., or as we like to say, president in training. (hint: Parroting spin makes you look silly if you don't know what it means)

ibewalkingtomemphis

Tech, that's about 20 more months executive experience than both your puke boys have combined, life's a beiaatch, "ain't" it?

TechLover

IB: Very intellectual and classy comment. I'm betting you're a Republican.

SisterAbdullahX_

TechLover....surly you won't judge all Republicans by the comments of one? If so, people might judge all Democrats by the insane comments that Palin has no experience, when their own candidate has less.

factchecker

McCain has done a 180 by picking Palin as his running mate because she is inexperienced? What about Obama picking a Washington good 'ole boy when he says he wants to bring change? Me doest think the Dems do protest too much!!!

TechLover

PT: I'm Not "parroting" anything. I don't have to listen to others ie: Rush Hannity,O'Reilly, or anyone else on Faux news, to form my opinions. I have a BA with a double major in history and political science with an emphasis in national security policy. I think the "parroting" might be coming from the other side. A short run as governor of Alaska isn't much of a reume. This takes away McCain's major argument against Obama. I have friends from Alaska and believe me, it's almost like another country. Little experience than can translate into running the US.

ibewalkingtomemphis

tech, just like yours, except for the fact that my statement on the expeerience is correct. nobama/jobama 08!!!!! Does that help you out!

justthefacts

I'd rather have an old President teaching a young VP to be president rather than an old VP teaching a young President how to be President.

Everyone that I talk to is very excited about the possibility of having new leadership in Washington after been without any for the past eight years. A new day is dawning. Fox news was speechless after Obama's laid out his program. They twisted and turned trying to find criticism. We all need to work hard to get out the vote for Obama so he will be sworn in in Jan.
I am as proud as the Augusta Chronicle. We might not see this again in our lifetime afther the next 8 years. We can leave this earth knowing, we saw it in our life time and we can tell our children we were part of it. We can make amends for the times we stood silent and watched so much injustices take place in our great nation. But, even better than that - Obama seems to be the best choice. As always, have a blessed day and be part of history.

factchecker

Obama is the best choice for "no change". How is Biden change? Again I say, being the first is not always being the best.

TechLover

William Henry Harrison died after 31 days in office. Hope he teaches fast.

How many tasks will Obama decide is "above my paygrade"? I want a President that follows the part of his job description that says "Any and all other duties assigned" not one that separates duties by "paygrade". Obama is the typical democratic government worker. Go MCCAIN/PALIN 08 & 12!!!

I4PUTT

Even though this is an opinion forum, I will wait to voice mine about Governor Palin. I choose not to immediately make a fool out of myself like sigarci, by passing judgement before I learn something more about her. I will point out that many presidents have chosen odd VP's. JFK & LBJ, Bush & Quayle, come to mind immediately. It also amazes me that so many here who have defende first time senator Obama regarding his lack of experience would dare to mention that about any other canidate. Remember He took office in Jan 05, Senators only have about 75 work days per year, and has spent the last 20 months on the campaign. If you're new on the job who do you really have senority over.

SisterAbdullahX_

TechLover....what is wrong with you. Just because Harrison died, that means McCain will die? Your logic, or lack thereof is shocking.

LBenedict

Why wouldn't McCain choose Palin? Her record of results and exposing fraud, waste, abuse, and corruption is second to none. SHE is one of us...PTA, parent, coach, family-oriented. More experience than Obama too! Let's face it - Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. blew it big time: promising to bring change to Washington by selecting a DC permanent fixture who has been there 36 years who defines partisan mean-spiritedism as his VP choice, probably because Obama knows nothing. Then, after a McCain staffer confirmed, but before the formal announcement, that Palin was the choice, Obama issued a statement claiming that McCain chose a mayor of a town of 9,000 with no foreign affairs experience who is a friend of big oil. This shows just how ignorant and arrogant he is...HEY BARACK, she is a sitting GOVERNOR who has publicly taken on big oil. Plus, she has executive experience...Obama has NONE. What foreign affairs experience does Hussein have? None. Another glaring example of the classless Obama who is in well over his head, and many of us love it. Obama is all talk who has done nothing but prey on the misery of others.

JesusIsComing

Sarah Palin has been my pick for VP since I first heard her name mentioned as a possible contender for the position a few weeks ago. This was a brilliant move by McCain and one that solidified the Evangelical and Conservative base of the party. I was shocked that McCain chose her but comforted that McCain actually will make the right decisions for our Nation. This bodes well for his conservative choices for the cabinet, the Supreme Court, and Federal judges. McCain will not be bullied like Bush was (hopefully) and will be less willing to waste our tax dollars to please various groups. The Palin nomination absolutely took the air out of the Obama campaign. I believe 2008 will be a sweep year for Republicans - from President through Congress - and perhaps we can cut spending, keep the Bush tax cuts, and continue the war on terror until it is won. I am sending my contribution to McCain/Palin this weekend!

Don't: Obama's statement was about when does "life" begin. That varies by faith/religion. In the Jewish faith life begins at birth. Some believe it's as conception. I don't think "other duties assigned" refers to answering questions only God would know.

Oh tech, you have a little bs degree in history. Boy, I'm impressed!!! You have about as much experience as nobama!
