Would it be soaring rhetoric? Or meat-on-the-bones policy stuff?

Lakeisha Chestnut, of Birmingham, Ala., cried as Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama gives his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on Thursday.

Well, it was a little bit of both, and a whole lot of history, when America's first major-party African-American presidential candidate formally accepted the Democratic nomination Thursday night before a football-stadium crowd of 80,000.

With so many viewing choices, there aren't too many cultural events that most of America shares these days. But channel after TV channel showed this huge bit of history, coming on the anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, while at watch parties throughout the country, blacks wept with pride as they remembered the bad old days of segregation and hopelessness.

The dream, a big part of it anyway, came true Thursday night. Now, all of America's children can truly grow up believing they could be president.

Whatever that particular ceiling is made of, Barack Obama has smashed it.

His sweeping acceptance speech outlined an Obama presidency of tax cuts and investments in education and new-age fuels and health care for all and equal pay for women.

He also talked of self-reliance and responsibility and the need for parents to take over parenting from the television.

He didn't say exactly how he would make all those investments and tax cuts with the federal government already hundreds of billions in the red each year. He didn't say what the government should do about "equal pay" beyond outlawing discrimination, which it already does. And his calls for self-reliance and personal responsibility don't jibe very well with his repeated calls for government succor. Mr. Obama invites comparisons to John F. Kennedy, but seems only to tell us what our country can do for us, standing Kennedy's philosophy on its head.

In that respect, Mr. Obama is in good company. That's all that most of our politicians do anymore is promise us more stuff -- with money borrowed from China.

We're also deeply troubled by the details of Mr. Obama's legislative record -- which we'll explore in an editorial tomorrow.

For now, however, all Americans should share in Barack Obama's historic ascendancy to the pinnacle of his party.

All of us who are eager to move on from a troubled racial past have been dreaming of this since King's speech 40 years ago.

Or twice the length of Rip Van Winkle's long slumber.

King's speech was 45 years ago. And you are supposed to be journalists. Not paying attention were you. So much for knowing your history. 38 Million (not including CSPAN, PBS, internet and radio) watched the historic speech by Obama. That is more than watched the opening of the Olympics, the Oscars, and American Idol finale. The number that watched this speech was the largest in the history of conventions. The true numbers that witnessed what even some conservatives have said was "the greatest political convention speech ever" will easily exceed 40 Million. This is a national movement. Something big is happening. It is bigger than Obama/Biden and McSame/Palin and something really big is going to happen in November.

Obama's had his splash and came off promising much more then he can deliver, just like every other politician. His "tax the successful to reward the non-productive" plan is typical left wing socialism. A policy that has failed for years in Europe. His plan to get more people dependent on government will only serve to force more business, and jobs, to leave America for a better tax climate. His willingness to tax the successful even more to pay the medical costs of the country is a great plan, except for those paying. When they leave, who will pay then? His speech was very moving, the question now is, if he wins the presidency, who will move where? It was an historic event and I'm glad I took time to watch it.

your right pt...my money is already put where he can't touch it and I 'm sure anyone with any brains will do the same..so just where is bo going to get it?

Just because he is the first one does not mean he is the right one.

Let's talk first about the historical significance of this nomination. I am delighted to finally see this, a black or any other minority chosen to lead a major party in the bid for the White House. This could not have happened just one generation ago. I'm truly proud. I just don't get Senator Obama. Why would we choose him? He still has no experience. He has not done anything noteworthy in the senate. He has questionable ties to terrorists, favors Marxist teachings, readily talks about stealing profits from successful companies for the government, wants to rape the wealthy to pay for the poor, has a Robin Hood mentality, wants to end the war in Iraq despite all the good that has come of it, and constantly derides American citizens. He delivers a speech really well when someone writes it for hin, but when asked spontaneous questions he stutters like a fool. I've said this before, IMHO he seems like an empty suit with lots of charisma. After seeing the DNC, I will definitely vote for McCain 08.

Everyone that I talk to is very excited about the possibility of having new leadership in Washington after been without any for the past eight years. A new day is dawning. Fox news was speechless after Obama's laid out his program. They twisted and turned trying to find criticism. We all need to work hard to get out the vote for Obama so he will be sworn in in Jan.
I am as proud as the Augusta Chronicle. We might not see this again in our lifetime afther the next 8 years. We can leave this earth knowing, we saw it in our life time and we can tell our children we were part of it. We can make amends for the times we stood silent and watched so much injustices take place in our great nation. But, even better than that - Obama seems to be the best choice. As always, have a blessed day and be part of history.

JesusIsComing

The speech was absolutely forgetable (typical Democrat positions) but the moment was truly historic. MLK's Dream has come true. Now that McCain has solifified his Evangelical and Conservative base by picking Palin as his VP, I forsee a 49-state sweep in November for McCain/Palin. The Palin pick made eveyone forget about the DNC convention. It was truly the perfect pick!

factchecker

Fox does not have to twist and turn to find criticism in Obama. Let's talk about his "change" with Biden as a running mate. How long has Biden been in Washington? How many times has he voted for PORK and even received it himself? What change? Sounds like he wants a running mate that can teach him how to get in the same old patterns of Washington. The fact that he wants to make a republic a socialist state alone makes the criticism very easy. It seems so odd to me that the rich Democrats are willing to give yours and my money away to the lazy and poor when we can afford it least. That should be a personal contribution, not mandated by the state. What else will be mandated by the state under Obama? McCain has shown that he will not just "follow the party line" on numerous occassions. His VP pick alone shows that willingness. Palin has spearheaded ethics investigations on both parties in her state. She has [filtered word] off established Republicans because of it. So I don't think McCain is towing the party line and his VP pick proves it.

nobama is good at making promises he cannot keep and has no intention of even trying. Oh, and I loved his statement, (paraphrased) I'm not running for myself, I'm running for YOU! HA, on of his giggest lies yet. Ignorant people will follow though, Like the fairy tale, The Pied Piper!

shivas

The AC being gracious is very nice. Moat right-wingers only want to hate and spew lies.

jack234

Give mine to the poor if they need it. Why should I have money stored up in the bank that I don't need and there are children and the elderly without the necessities of life. I don't know about the creation of a socialist state. Last time I checked, our government still has "check and balances" I don't see how we are able to tolerate what we have had for the past 8 years and say nothing but defend it and at the same time be critical of what might or might not happen if Obama is elected. We know what the past 8 years have been like, Obama can only offer hope for a better future. Personally, I don't fear the future. I'm too busy regretting the past. As always, you have a blessed day.

christian134

The moment has passed into history, about time well said, well written, now why not pay attention to what comes next people...If your so all fired impressed with Obama and his followers then so be it but who is going to pay for all the government assistance that has been promised by "king savior" Obama...I would suppose having a China backed nation with Muslim dictates will be just the ticket this great nation needs to put us back into the black so to speak....

ibewalkingtomemphis

Obama, "Sorry can't do, above my pay grade". That will be his line, when all the "gimme a handout" democrats start asking when he plans on fullfilling all those pie in the sky promises.

To those who care about this nation and all it's people and who have a profound belief in God read the following prayer by Billy Graham.. Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your
forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word
says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we
have
done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We
have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness
and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We
have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to
discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused
power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions
and
called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography
and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored
values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God,
and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free.
Amen!'

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio
program, 'The Rest of the Story,' and received a larger response to
this
program than any other he has ever aired. With the Lord's help, may this
prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we
again can be called 'One nation under God.'

ZenoElia

134, I like that prayer. Sounds REAL, not fake like so much rhetoric we hear these days. I personally think we need a leveler playing field. While the haves are hiding their cash offshore and nothing from that trickles down to those in need of work or help and while corporations hoard their cash and assets and greed works its ugly system on those who can get-mo, those who have nothing are having their nothings taken away...sure let's give more to the preachers who slip campaign flyers into church bulletins to support war mongers and hate machines around the world while our own poor die homeless as people turn their heads and walk by them not even glancing at them...let's go ahead and become the cashless society so we can get those chips implanted that reveals all our personal and financial data so the gov't can track our coming and going and trap us by our doing so.... let's usher in the day of evil so we believers can go home and leave this mess to the devil and his followers who like the Pharisees of old are so heavenly minded they are no earthly good.

Ya'll have a blessed day, I'm going shopping to store up on food and other necessities before Obama gets a chance to take away all I worked for just to give it to someone too lazy to work for their own.

factchecker

I have a dream and that dream is to work and pay my own way. Besides Gov'ment Cheese is too greasy.

Until yesterday I was determined to vote "none of the above" in November. Now I can't wait to vote for McCain-Palin. These two have the potential to bring about real and positive change.

ZenoElia

don wanna-be... thanx for validating my prior post. Feed the greed, ignore any opportunity to help others and see how much you keep when all your toys are broken and the soil and water no longer produce anything safe to eat or drink because the rich dump all their junk into our natural resources. Keep up the pollution, for both mind and body..and while you're at it, keep expressing your pride so you can fall flat on your face when God hammers you into little pieces and spreads your remains like manure on the ground for sinners and saints to tread under their feet. I love you for working so hard to serve your self while others die all around your uncaring butt.

Zeno - you don't get the point...I should be able to contribute to those on my own and not have it mandated by the government. When I go before God what the government took and gave doesn't count. All that counts is what I choose to contribute of my own free accord. I don't need the government to stand before God on my behalf and say this is what we took and gave to ---, this is what we took and gave to ---. I can stand there myself and say that I gave to the those that TRULY needed my help. Have you ever just gone to the local Senior Center and asked for the name and address of a senior that they knew could not afford food or electricity or gas and then showed up at their home with what they truly needed instead of giving them the government red tape. Bags of groceries save lives to those that can't (not won't) but can't do for themselves, gov'ment cheese makes those that are just plain lazy, lazier and dependant. Don't presume to know how I walk in my shoes until you have walked in them for me.

I was talking to a friend of mine's little girl the other day.
I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied, "I want to be President!" Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there. So then I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"
She replied, "I'd give houses to all the homeless people."
"Wow - what a worthy goal." I told her, "You don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward a new house."
Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds. While her Mom glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"
And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."
Her folks still aren't talking to me.

ZenoElia

don-wanna-be, you could have just told her the homeless person doesn't want to work. That would be more like the Repukes answer. Here's my answer to the 9:35 post. Lazy people are lazy. You can't make them more lazy than they already are. But hard work leads to profit according to scripture. So applying that principle to all the struggling families who are losing children for lack of health care, or fighting a nonsense war of greed, or losing their homes because two min wage jobs don't pay the rent, or not able to ride a bus because they don't run when they work, and the car they had broke down w/o money to fix it, or the education the children get in a public school doesn't teach them to read or write, they just pass them anyway, making non-productive working class laborers or service persons who can never get ahead because no one ever took the time to set a good example...so how do these folks cope? They lose hope, commit crimes, not for easy money but because they are mad as heck at the establishment who keeps them down by spreading race hatred and setting the greed example...some folks see things other than your own view.

ZenoElia

Your 9:45 would not be so bad if you had not made a political essay out of it for a six-yr-old. I help non-working 'lazy' folks earn their daily bread when my work requires an additional hand. I give just like in your example, but mine is not fiction, I actually do things like this. I make ends meet. My daily prayer is not unlike one from Proverbs ch 30, "Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: lest I be full, and deny thee and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain." I'm not working for anything to save or build up, but when I have excess I spread it upon the waters and after many days it comes back to me. I plant and water, but God gives the increase. Do I keep it or give it away? I can't take it with me. So what would Jesus do? He said we'll always have the poor with us. Do you think he lied? So what might I infer from his statement? I prefer to live by the golden rule. Do you?

factchecker

Yes the preverbial "the man is keeping me down" sob story. Funny I don't see Bill Cosby, Secretary Rice, Alan Keyes, Barrack Obama, Jesse Jackson (oh he may not be a good example here) um, Chris Gardner, Will Smith (I could go on and on) standing there for government handouts. They come from an oppressed minority and they seem to have overcome that. Anybody can do it unless they are physically or mentally unable. They just have to want it bad enough and so long as they get gov'ment cheese they don't have to want it.

factchecker

Zeno - If you are talking about my going to a senior center and finding out who is truly needy and giving to them and calling that fiction you are way past mistaken. Try giving directly instead of the government being your agent of dispersal. Cut out all the middle men (churches included) and give directly to the end user. That way 100 cents of every dollar is going to the people you are trying to help.

ZenoElia

don wanna-be, I guess you didn't read my 10:06 post. The fiction was the little girl story that you analogized to her. I rarely run into anyone who is hungry who is not willing to work for a few bucks cash and a meal. I don't hire drunks or crack-heads. They have their own food and none I ever met like that ever wanted anything but more self-destruction. I let them go with a simple few words: "it's your choice to be like you are now. Choose life instead of death, but choose." I share my faith until they walk away. Once they have rejected the free gift of faith, I look for someone who is more willing to find the freedom that comes with forgiveness. And when I hire a temp off the streets like that, it's a good chance later they will be looking for me, because they know I give self-respect as part of the offer. Most able-bodied men or women want that more than anything, including money. It's the love of money that is the root of all kinds of evil, not money itself. I certainly don't love money, but I am my brother's keeper. I do this because my own birth-brother who is an ordained minister doesn't know what this means. So I set the example for him to see.

ZenoElia

Don-wanna, if you act as you say you do, then perhaps you'd be willing to give me leads on jobs. The more work I have, the more folks I find that can work will be doing... instead of sitting, wishing and wanting. I get great satisfaction out of what I do along this line. There is no greater reward when I get paid than to know I helped someone, if for just one day. I'm storing my treasure in heaven in hopes that I will receive that crown promised for doing the Lord's will. I'm glad you help the seniors. I'm helping the poor and homeless street people that most folks just despise and spit upon. Someone has to do something. I support govt assistance but I think to do that responsibly is what is missing. Too many caseworkers at DFCS and other places like it favor their friends, and deny the worthy and willing. It should be the other way around. Cutting breaks to friends because they are your 'cousin' while denying help to the dislocated worker or temp disabled is wrong. That is the govt corruption at the local level that needs fixing. Catching the workers and proving their corruption is very hard to do. But I witness it all the time.

Change is in the air. I am so excited. McCain-Palin. What a great ticket. The one we have been waiting for. Sorry, GW I love you, but we are more than ready for a change to McCain -Palin. MccCain-Palin '08

I would like to see more families and office personnel go with "adopt a family" for Christmas this year, rather than give dad another tie he doesn't need or the boss a sweater he will never wear. The collection in my small family is enough to purchase food for a needy family, Christmas dinner and gift certificates. Try it. It works.
