Officer is cleared in fatal car chase
An Aiken Public Safety officer did not violate procedures during a chase that ended with the death of the driver being pursued, the department said.
According to police, about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Cpl. Chris Carter tried to stop the driver of a 1995 Jeep Cherokee on Whiskey Road on suspicion of driving under the influence. Twenty-two-year-old Brendan Ryan Wilson didn't stop for the patrol car's blue lights, said Lt. David Turno, a spokesman for the department.
Cpl. Carter pursued Mr. Wilson for about two miles before Mr. Wilson hit a tree on Silver Bluff Road. According to the coroner's office, he died at the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Speed is considered a factor in the accident, and toxicology results are pending.
Autopsy confirms suspect's suicide
An autopsy has confirmed that a 39-year-old Augusta man shot himself in the head Monday after barricading himself in his home.
Richmond County sheriff's deputies were serving a domestic violence warrant to Todd Santos, of 1119 Emmett St., when he barricaded himself inside the home. They then heard gunshots from inside. The home was also set on fire, and the first floor was damaged extensively.

pofwe, all autopsies aren't alike. Some are more detailed and involve blood analysis and DNA testing while others are little more then a close physical inspection of the body.

Brendan Ryan Wilson had drugs in his vehicle and tried to avoid arrest by his attempt to flee, which initiated the pursuit and his sub-standard driving skills caused the crash and his demise. Pray for his family, move on, and stop blaming law enforcement for tragic endings that violators bring solely on themselves.

i watched an interview with mr wilsons mother on the news and she blames acsd for her sons death and accused them of murder.WRONG,HOW CAN SHE ACCUSE THE SHERRIFS DEPT OF MURDER FOR DOING THEIR JOB.she should have taught her son to obey and respect the law ,if she had he would be alive today.he was killed breaking the law,aiken county cant help how he was raised.

A mother never wants to blame thier child, but to blame the police is ludicrous. Had they not tried to stop him, he may have killed someone else driving while intoxicated. And even if he wasn't dui, at 20 he knows the consequences of running from the law, speeding, reckless driving, etc... he could have killed an innocent family there too!!! My sympathy is with his family, but I am only happy that no innocent person was killed by this irresponsible reckless behavior!! I do not blmae the police for giving chase, the ones who are solely responsible are the careless criminals. If they didn't run, there would be no chase. You getting out of being punished for a crime YOU decided to commit means more to you than killing innocent bystanders, then with that mentality people who run should be stopped at all costs!!! The officers should also use common sense when chasing, but the tires should be shot out, and from some of the dangerous chases I have seen on tv... even stopped by shooting the driver if need be to protect innocent people in harms way!!!

while I think his post was bit jerky too, you did imply a cover up, and people are just sick and tired of everyone blaming everyone else for these lowlife [filtered word] criminals every single day. These people have no reguard for thier fellow citzens, but yet you same people come up with every excuse in the book for them. IMO anyone caught running, once they get into a highly populated area should be shot down likea dog to make them stop to protect innocent people!!! This aint the dukes of hazzard!! I watched the mothers interview and I agree with her they should not chase...... they should riddle the car with bullets until it stops before the drunk or criminal can hit anyone!!! WE don't want to take the chance of hurting or killing the one whos posing the threat but to heck with the rest of the innocent public right??? Shes a very composed person for someone who lost thier child. I know everyone reacts different but she did not address her sons part in it and even giggled a tad when saying she thinks they murdered him. Maybe her and her son didn't get along or something. Now they may have left some out, but the composure and giggling when converying someone murdered your son does not seem right to me. She sounds more like a lawyer or a parent who was scripted by one to me... so sad. Not trying to judge, but it doesn't look right. I smell a lawsuit and higher taxes, just to make more excuses for criminal behavior. All the sympathy for th criminal, lets blame the officers, lets get rich and never even address the issue on how to deter these criminnal behaviors to start with or punish them appropriately when caught or stop them when then hey pose a threat to others, thier rights are more important than those the innocent law abiding citizens. I usually do not go this far with assumption, but this one irksme , especially so soon afterwards, kinda like patsy ramsays interviews!!! lol Hopefully it will be investigated properly and the right thing done in the end. My smpathy to the mother reguardless, noone should ever have the pain of losing a child, and the officer as I know this affects him greatly. No one ever likes being involved in anything like this with someone losing thier life or having to killl them on purpose, even if it is with a criminal.. I'm sure its not easy, like Earp said... belive me boy, you dont ever want to know, and I think he's right!!! I'd like to see the tape too.

lmaooo I know I know...not the same I just mean how the interview seemed kind of cold from a parent who just lost thier baby, didn't seem right. Doesnt mean she did it at all, but just always irked me, like scripted interviews with no feeling.

oh yeah I know and it doesn mean guilt becuase they arent upset, maybe they just didnt particulary like the child... it happens. Sometimes people cry so mcuh they are cried out. It just looks odd. I know they found the DNA not matching, doesnt mean they still werent involved and maybe they werent, just becuase they didn't do it doesnt mean they can not dislike thier child and not be totally distraut that they are gone. Sad, but true. Not everyone is a loving caring parent. I just compared the 2 becuase they both struck me as a little scripted or coached. I would like to see the dash cam. It just seems as if this will lead to a lawsuit and even though the officer may be cleared criminally if she goes civil anyway which most do hoping for a settlement, it is ruining the life even more of an officer (at least emotionally for him and his family)who doesn't deserve it for her sons criminal actions. And that would be more of a shame. IMO
It doesn't surprize me much these days when someone acts more interested in a law suit before the boy is even put in the ground...I'm just relieved they got him off the road before he hurt someone else.
