Crematory plans to move forward

ATLANTA --- Plans for a crematorium that riled Snellville residents will be allowed to go forward, though the operator might face new emission regulations.

City council members at a meeting Monday night acknowledged that a facility planned by Chris Nuzum, the president of the Cremation Society of the South, doesn't violate any city zoning rules or ordinances.

It followed a lengthy debate in the Atlanta suburb, driven by community members concerned that the operation housed in a former residence could emit harmful levels of mercury.

Mr. Nuzum told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he would get his certificate of occupancy for the business later in the week.

City officials cried foul after they said they were led to believe a different type of business would be located in the house along U.S. 78 and began steps to delay Mr. Nuzum's permit. Mr. Nuzum has argued his proposed business is within zoning requirements and delays in opening his business could trigger a lawsuit.

On Monday night, city manager Russell Treadway said studies on cremation emissions are inconclusive.

"While everyone acknowledges that too much mercury is bad, there's not consistent agreement as to what limits should be imposed," he said before presenting possible solutions that centered on regulating emissions.

Later, council members directed Mr. Treadway to draft potential regulations. He'll present those suggestions in September.

Mr. Nuzum, who operates crematories in Marietta and Stockbridge, chose a 2,000-square-foot, ranch-style home in the community after he learned the area was zoned for office and professional use.
