What was she thinking?

  • Follow Editorials

Any adults going on the TV show Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader? are risking huge embarrassment for themselves.

But Kathy Cox is risking embarrassment for the entire state of Georgia.

You can't blame the show's producers for thinking it'd be sporting to have a state superintendent of schools on the game show -- in which the adult contestant is asked grade-school level questions while a "class" of real fifth-graders provides occasional help (and unflattering comparisons).

But you have to wonder what, if anything, Cox was thinking when the Georgia superintendent of schools agreed to be on the show. It's been taped already and will air Sept. 5.

No one's saying how she did, but here's one ominous thought: If the contestants don't answer all the questions correctly, host Jeff Foxworthy asks them to look into the camera, say their name and admit "I'm not smarter than a fifth-grader!"

How's it going to look if the Georgia head of education has to do that?

Here's the answer, in case you're not smarter than a kindergartener: It's going to make Georgia look darn foolish.

For the record, we love the show, especially Foxworthy. And the kids on the show are Linkletter-cute. But the show's fanciful premise -- that we're supposed to remember everything from grade school science -- really puts the contestant behind the eight ball from the get-go. It can be a no-win situation.

For anyone else, putting their reputation on the line like that is their business. In this case, it's our business. It's the state's image on the line.

For a state that annually ranks near or at the bottom in SAT scores, is that a risk Cox should have taken on our behalf?

The state of Georgia has always been at the bottom of the educational totem pole for years and years...It started when the system sought to give everyone an equal opportunity at an education and ended with the levels reaching an all time low...Now maybe if Superintendent Cox gets the proverbial 'pie in the face' education will once again become the the "R's" for real and not some kind of warped version the educational system has evolved...The only other state with similar patterns of a defunct educational system would be South Carolina..

JimCox

On the other hand, what if she does well?

shivas

I think Georgia ranking in the bottom 10 in education is embarresment enough. Yet, the right-wing will continue to vote her in because she's a Republican.

christian134

Lucky break JimCox...

dashiel

Maybe not, Shivas. She could get a job as Miss Piggy's understudy. Georgia already has enough oinkers in office.

stillamazed

She'll probably do as well as anyone else on the show, you see people on that show who are educated all over the place and they don't do good either....they have had educators on there before that did not fair well even though they were not for Georgia. I often wonder when reading post that if the majority of you who post here hate the state of Georgia so much why do you continue to live here and also what are you doing to try to improve things besides complain on post everyday??????

christian134

There ya go again with that word "hate"...My word just because someone voices an opinion that is contrary to what you believe then we are "haters"...Please it just means that many of us have fought the good fight for so long we are just plain to tired to keep fighting...Time for the 5:00smwhr's to take over...As for me I will just keep complaining...:-)

I've watched the show and find it "less then challenging". Most 3rd graders could answer the silly questions and the adults that can't respond intelligently were too goofy to know their limits before going on the show, or they don't mind playing the fool (for whatever reason). I expect Kathy Cox to answer all of the questions correctly and I hope she's charming while doing it. (I'm not surprised some of the editorial staff feel the challenge may be too much)

crazyoldman

If she does good wouldn't that mean she's been hanging out with Fifth-Graders a bit much?

jackfruitpaper833

Just ungodly and unholy.

I'm a bit surprised at the stance of The Chronicle on this issue. Their opinion of public schools is such that how could one believe that a fith grader could possibly be smarter than a Republican?? Don't public schools waste minds and money? Give out vouchers and do away with public schools according to those Republicans!
Oh wait, silly me, maybe these kids are from Columbia County, the best school system in the universe! That's what The Chronicle is concerned about, now I understand.

Re: 5:49am post..."The state of Georgia has always been at the bottom of the educational totem pole for years and years...It started when the system sought to give everyone an equal opportunity at an education..." What a freaking tragedy! An equal opportunity at an education for everyone?!?!?! We know EVERYONE doesn't deserve that opportunity! Whoever did this should be shot!

christian134

love ya gagirl just love ya....:-)

christian134

Are you bemoaning your education or overjoyed gagirl?

Christian134, there you go again putting words in someones mouth....based on your posts you are a hater of many things, I could care less if someone agrees with my opinion or not, it is mine and mine alone but I know if I disliked a place so much I would find a better place to live instead of putting it and it's people down all the time. I would be willing to bet you that there are alot of places in this country alot worse than the Augusta area to live. Complaining without actually taking action serves no one. Maybe you might consider running for public office and perhaps then you may could get somethings that you dislike about the area changed.

christian134

I don't hate I just don't like or care for many actions and or words coming for some folks...There is a difference...:-)I don't know you and I don't hate you even if I did know you...

christian134

As far as working in the public and with the Board of Education I have been there and done that...Health reasons dear and age...:-)

White_Trash1

Its a game show, for entertainment, If you can do that much better than any other contestant, audition and get on the show.

crazyoldman

I've never watch it. Do they not gear the questions toward Fifth-Graders? (video games, Television shows, the latest trends and such)

jack234

I don't understand why christian12345 don't believe everyone shouldn't have an equal opportunity at an educastion. You can't just pick out parts of the constitution that you like and forget about the rest. That is not the American way. By the way Mrs. Clinton hit a grand slam as did Mrs. Obama. Of course, Fox
(fair and balance) put its usual spin on things. We did't expect any less from Fox. Now, you have a blessed day and try to get some work done today.

It a gameshow people...why does everything have to turn into a debate?? PT, to have so much wisdom about EVERYTHING, you sure are still confusing the use of 'then' vs 'than'. That my friend would probably be a 4th grade question that is "less THAN challenging. Again, it must be great to be a genius. Fact is, Cox on the show will be representing herself only. Some of you whining about her testing her knowledge are the same folk whining about people not accepting personal responsibility. So what if she doesn't do well, there have been doctors, lawyers, and teachers on the show and none of them have won the $1million. My goodness, people can't even take a moment to enjoy a good gameshow without judgement.

christian134

I really did not say that jack234 please...All I was referring to a general let down in the education system compared to the rest of the nation...Your really reaching now...Quite frankly when I moved now here what seems eons ago from the North I was shocked just how far behind the school curriculum was compared to the schools my children had attended...It was...Well quite shocking...Now you want to make something more out of the comment be my guest...

I can't wait to vote this ditso brain out of office. I'm at the pont where I would vote for John Edwards if he ran in two years for Education Supt! She wastes money on a poorly written Social Studies CRCT 8th grade test, She has totally destroyed the math curriculum not allowing 8th graders to take Algebra. 8th grade gifted use the same book and take the same curriculum as everyone else. It's no longer Algebra, Geometry, and trig. No wonder GA keeps falling behind in SAT scores and has to socially promote kids who fail the CRCT because the tests do not match the curriculum. Enough already!!! Get her outta there!

ooops, this thing posted three times!

I'm not sure that this is the biggest issue facing the GA DOE... I'm pretty relaxed about Cathy going on the show, myself. Don't we all know that political maneuverings--not education--get one to the top job in ANY state bureaucracy? If anyone is waiting for the results of a game show to tell them how education is working in GA, well... ACES, you wasted your time on this one...
