Attorney general has odd view of crime

  • Follow Letters

So U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey, the highest law enforcement official in the land, is quoted saying, "Not every wrong, or even every violation of the law, is a crime."

That seems odd. I'd always thought a law was either obeyed or broken. And if a law is broken, that is by definition a crime. But it is certain that many Bush associates will be thrilled to hear this unique interpretation of jurisprudence, since breaking laws has been the rule, rather than the exception, for the past seven years. The likes of Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorneys General Alberto Gonzales and John Ashcroft, among others, can rest easy knowing that lawbreaking has no consequences, at least for those at the top.

With this new slant on the law, maybe President Bush won't even have to grant pre-emptive pardons when he leaves office in January, which is within his power, to the many miscreants within his administration.

I cant help wondering: If I found myself on the wrong side of the law for any reason, how far would I get with the judge by saying "Not every violation of the law is a crime"?

Nice circle Ross. All of this just to say there were many miscreants in this administration? Nice circle.

mukasey is a crook like his boss and cheney the biggest crook in the land.they know he will approve of their dirty tactics, that's why he got the job.one shining spot? he only has a few more months before he's shown the door.

"shown the door" pauldrake? I guess all those other Presidents before W were "shown the door" as well, right? As for being a crook and having commited crimes as alleged, how about specifying them and why have Bush nor Cheny nor Gonzales, nor my favorite Ashcroft, not been indicted or impeached?

BTW, breaking of some laws are not crimes, but are considered misdemeanors. I realize this is above the average DIMocRAT's intellect.

Remember, that great Republican Statesman, Richard "I am not a crook" Nixon, said "if the President of the United States does it, that means it is not a crime"..
Bush and his crew merely expanded the concept to include the entire Administration.

come on jack yes, shown the door, obama doesn't want the bum.it's kind of hard to get 2/3 of the senate to impeach when you have the majority 6 years.pelosi and reed knew there wouldn't be enough time, anyway.you mean 7 deferments ashcroft?he has more than cheney did, what a coward! the same ashcroft who lost the 2000 senate race to mel carnahan who died 2 weeks before the general election?the good folks in missouri still elected him and the gov appointed his wife to his seat.THIS JOHN ASHCROFT?JACK?
