22-year-old dies during chase, authorities say

An Aiken man died in a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning as he was being chased by Aiken Department of Public Safety, police say.

Brendan Ryan Wilson, 22, of the 1200 block of Gray Mare Hollow Road, died at the scene, according to a news release from Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

At 3:35 a.m., the 1995 Jeep Cherokee driven by Mr. Wilson hit with a tree on Silver Bluff Road near Jenifer Drive, Mr. Carlton stated.

Officers had tried to stop Mr. Wilson on Whiskey Road on suspicion of driving under the influence, but he didn't stop for a patrol car's blue lights, said Aiken Department of Public Safety Lt. David Turno.

The chase lasted about two miles before ending in the crash. Lt. Turno said the chase met Aiken Department of Public Safety's protocol.

"If someone's suspected of DUI or a felony like bank robbery, we will chase if traffic conditions and time of day are permissible," he said.

Speed was considered a factor in the crash, and toxicology test results are pending.

Narcotics were found in Mr. Wilson's vehicle, Lt. Turno said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Indian artifacts stolen from history center

Several American Indian artifacts have been reported stolen in a break-in at the Beech Island History and Visitors Center.

Aiken County sheriff's deputies responded to the center in the 100 block of Old Jackson Highway at about 1 p.m. Friday, according to an Aiken County Sheriff's Office dispatcher.

Jackie Bartley, the president of the Beech Island Historical Society, said she believes that some time Thursday night, burglars broke through the burglar bars of the historical society's building and stole 16 American Indian artifacts, including stones, pottery and arrowheads. Also reported stolen was a box containing several metal artifacts dating to the 1700s.

Ms. Bartley said she had not yet determined the value of the items.

"It's not the value of them, it's the history," she said. "We're hoping someone will help us find out what happened to the artifacts."

Anyone with information about the case can call the Aiken County Sheriff's Office at (800) 9229709.

If they started punishing these [filtered word]' drunk drivers with more jail taime, maybe you could deter this activity. But since our lawmakers only care about the money, innocent people will continue to die. God forbid, but maybe if one of their family members were to die from a 5 time drunk driver whos never spent more than a night in jail, they will finally get the picture!!! My deepest sympathy to Ms. colemans family and to the family of wilson. None for the drunk drivers. I'm just glad in the chase there were no innocents killed. Now fraley should be punished severely!!!!

Geee...more fatalities on South Carolina highways???? Not surprising to me because I don't think any body in the whole state knows how to drive. I guess they were having a blue light special on drivers liscenses at K mart....So none of this surprises me in the least they can't drive sober or drunk.

sassymouth I am from South Carolina and at least while we were at KMart taking advantage of the blue light special we had insurance to go along with some of our bad drivers. Georgia non drivers don't have insurance and are forever wrecking so please keep your sassy comments to yourself. And another thing while you are such a great driver, take you well driven behind to school and learn how to spell. HOW U DOING!!!!

wow, you kill someone & you're charged with dui!!!

Why is that South Carolinians have fatal accidents hourly. First you guys should invest in street lights and paint for the lines in the road. Besides everybody in GA knows you guys are terrible drivers and you just hate it because you are always gettin honked at or cursed out in Richmond County. I totally agree with sassy mouth. I hate going over there. Trust me I only go when I really really have to because they can not drive. I am constantly watching my mirrors when I am over there. Just look at how they drive in Augusta. SLOW!!! But then again keep driving slow because we all know what happens when South Carolinians speed up. FUNERALS. Also to lash out at vq815 all of you guys need full coverage. In fact ask Govenor Sanford to make it mandatory!!! HA

am i 2 understand he is a 5 time repeater? i have family and friends there who have told me he has some family in high places someone please confirm!!!! also i understand the young man was speeding as well..all i kno if he would've been of a darker color. a dui charge would be the less of what he was worried about...u kno as much power, technology, and more things than we the public will EVER know, it amazes me that dui deaths dont demand more attention....commercials ARENT WORKING WE NEED BETTER AND MORE STRICT LAWS SO THAT ALL PEOPLE WILL WAKE UP!!!!!!STAY STRONG brother d and 2 the Coleman family

I'm sorry that I have to say something again, but for my Best Friend's mother to have been killed by Daniel Fraley (The Judge's Son) a 5x repeat offender, who left the scene of the crime and returned with his parents, his punishment treated as if no life had been lost, no children left motherless, no grandchildren left without a heritage, is shameful, senseless, heartless, and INHUMANE!!! EDGEFIELD COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT needs to refresh their manuals, because, when someone is killed by a vehicle it's called: VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER regardless if the driver is drunk or sober!!! My heart goes out to the COLEMAN FAMILY and my deepest regrets, I LOVE YOU ALL!!!

what and he left the scene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow!!!!
