Cynthia Mitchell is the neighborhood coordinator at Aiken's Neighborhood and Development Services.
1. What is Neighborhood University?
It gives individuals a working knowledge of how each department operates, the different daily procedures, the best way to access service. It just gives the residents a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of public works, planning and zoning, parks and recreation, public safety, finance, neighborhood development services and the city manager's office.
2. How did the program get started?
The city began the program in 2005 after learning from other cities what their neighborhood departments did to better serve and inform citizens. We found that when we worked with neighborhoods and went to different neighborhood meetings, we were answering the same questions over and over. So we thought we would put it in course material and do education for all of the neighborhoods at one time."
3. How long is the program and where does it meet?
Neighborhood University is a five-week course that begins Sept. 18. It meets at 6 p.m. at different city facilities.
4. Why is this an important program?
It's important for residents throughout the community to have a more thorough knowledge of their local government. We really hope that when they go through the Neighborhood University it may spark an interest in the residents to become a part of city activities.
5. How can people sign up for Neighborhood University?
Those interested in signing up or who want more information can call Neighborhood and Development Services at (803) 642-7779.
