AIKEN -- In tough economic times, nonprofit organizations often find raising funds a challenge just as the demand for their services is growing.
"Most people don't realize that the tougher the economy gets, the needs in the community increase," said Jacquelyn Kane, the director of resource development for the United Way of Aiken County.
The agency has hit upon a win-win situation that raises money for its program while providing fun for the public.
The United Way of Aiken County will hold its inaugural Summertime Soiree fundraiser on Sept. 6 at the Woodside Plantation Country Club. There will be a band that specializes in shag music, food and a cash bar.
Johnny and Judy Turner of the CSRA Shag Club will be on hand to give a dance demonstration, "so we're encouraging people who are shaggers to come out," Ms. Kane said.
"One of the reasons why we came up with this is it's a challenging year, economically, for everybody, and we wanted to come up with something that was affordable and entertaining at the same time," she said. "This is about coming together as a community to achieve results that make a difference right here in the CSRA."
Ms. Kane said interest in the event has been high, and the agency hopes it will sell out.
So far, about half of the 250 available tickets have been sold.
All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Aiken County and the more than 60 programs that help neglected and abused children, the elderly and the mentally challenged, Ms. Kane said.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. They can be purchased at the United Way of Aiken County, 235 Barnwell Ave. S.W. in Aiken or by calling (803) 648-8331.
