Bear that once roamed area killed in Alabama

  • Follow Metro

A black bear from Florida that was tranquilized and captured in June off Augusta's Mike Padgett Highway did not fare so well last week in northern Alabama.

"He ended up in Alabama and was killed," said Georgia wildlife biologist Vic VanSant, who helped capture the bear at Richmond County's 4-H camp June 23 and later released it near Helen, Ga.

The 250-pound male bear had an ear tag when it was captured in Augusta, and biologists later learned it had been captured and tagged last fall at Pinhook Swamp near St. George, Fla.

In Augusta, the bear was treed by dogs and tranquilized with a dart. Then it passed out draped over a limb more than 60 feet up a tree, and Richmond County Fire Department officials helped rescue it.

Mr. VanSant drove the bear to north Georgia in hopes it would remain in unpopulated areas.

Last week, however, it ended up in a neighborhood near Athens, Ala., and was again chased up a tree.

This time, officers shot and killed it, according to The Associated Press.

Capt. Johnny Johnson of the Alabama Department of Conservation said officers deemed the bear dangerous because it had lost its fear of humans, the AP account stated.

Officers did not have a tranquilizer gun, so they opted to kill the bear instead.

seeing it was up a tree and

seeing it was up a tree and not a direct threat couldn't they have gotten a tranquilizer from an area vet and then possibly taken it to a zoo. Just seems there should be a better solution.

There are more black bears.

There are more black bears. They're a renewable resource. This one apparently had a hankering to be a rug and a series of steaks. If it was shot and thrown away, THAT would have been a waste.(kind of like executing a perfectly healthy felon without harvesting the usable parts)

Alabama - black bear - Yeah,

Alabama - black bear - Yeah, I see it very clearly now. If it had been a white polar bear I betcha those Alabama boys would've saved it. But, being a black bear, they shot it! Needs to be an investigation.

Bear meat is pretty good, not as good as deer, moose, or elk, but still tasty. Seriously it is the "bear economy" so people are [filtered word] and need some outlet to vent. hee, hee, hee. Kill a bear-simple solution.

This is what America is known

This is what America is known for. KILLING, thru history what America wanted, THEY GOT, even if they had to kill you to get it. Good example: The movie with Mark Walberg...SHOOTER...This movie is much more true than false & more true than anyone will ever admit.

All the human race are

All the human race are killers. Except for a few religious figures (Christ, Muhammed, Buddha, etc) and fewer political figures (MLKjr and Ghandi) most prefer violence, hate, and killing. Whether you like or agree with any particular religion-religions generally are the only venues in history that have methodically and systematically introduced honesty, love, and peace as counter philosophies to those of lying, cheating, hating, and killing. There are fewer deer hunter hunters now than five years ago, but many more deer. The big deer hunter surge is over-thank the lord. Weekend warriors who don't know which end of a gun is up and have no love or appreciation of nature. The only reason there are any deer or ducks is because of hunters-ironic ain't it. Hunting financially supports more conservation and proliferation of wildlife than any environmental group.

Will the fools in Alabama opt

Will the fools in Alabama opt to kill humans too when other devices for controlling situations aren't available???? I'm scared of bears, but this one was in a tree. They should have called the proper authorities like the Augusta area did. :{

pt, are you an organ donor? A renewable source? You voice your opinion on an animal whose land is slowing being taken away just like the indians who had to move off their land and stay in less desirable areas. Have a heart for gods sake!

Nature has no

Nature has no heart-extinction is the means. 99.8% of the species that have inhabited earth are extinct. Of the .1% left we have only identified 10% of the species, and many are becoming extinct quicker than we can study them. It is nature-ecology and evolution at work.

interesting thought regarding

interesting thought regarding the introduction of love, honesty, and peace, biz. i would have to say that religions also tend to be among the finest institutions at introducing murder, atrocity, and genocide when it comes to those who disagree with the tenets of a particular religion. for those of you who are distressed about the bear shooting, ii agree with PT: there are plenty more bears where that one came from and, with the huge wave of bear sympathy about to crest, i'm sure the gov't will step in and write some fine legislation that will protect the bears' habitat from awful, pesky human encroachment.

I agree bone that many

I agree bone that many abominable acts have ocurred in the name of religion, but still the philosophy of the religion is what I stated. The fact that humans rationalize their atrocities should be no surprise, and I agree against the tenets of their religions. Even the Buddhist have had violent conflicts. Sad state of humanity. We are a violent lot, and I agree with Stephen Hawking that we likely will destroy ourselves because we can't be reasoned with by logic or reason.

patriciathomas Bear mammal

patriciathomas Bear mammal ..Human mammal both renewal resource...This is a good time to bring up the subject of human overpopulation. First rule: If you cannot afford children do not have them. Problem ignorance because there are not enough educational/other resources to go around. Please get the message to local, state and Federal government to implement family planning and birth control for Welfare recipients. They are breeding like rats. Middle class taxpayers grinn and bare it. The welfare class is where the street gangs are bred. The social pathology associated within the urbane welfare culture is far too wayward. Take a stand before one of them cuts your or a family members throat.

biz, not to belabor a point,

biz, not to belabor a point, but i think an equally valid argument for religion could be man's fear of death & attempt to explain the unknown; love, etc. could be seen as necessary biproducts resulting from the need to survive rather than a mystical explanation. but we'll probably just agree to disagree since neither of us know the real truth (but we're sure to find out someday, unfortunately). great societal tie-in, sgtmidtown.

again, stewartist, fear not:

again, stewartist, fear not: the natural habit of humans will be regulated soon enough to allow space for this most worthy of beasts to roam freely without pesky human interference. for starters, though, why not open up your home to a few of the local wild creatures? you could sleep outside and commune with nature / hug a tree while they enjoy the internet and cable t.v. (assuming you have such atrocious displays of man's contempt towards the natural world).

Bears are being pushed because of human development. How far will the human race push? Urban areas are being filled with ignorant welfare people who in turn push the educated people to the suburbs and rural areas.
