Brad, you are making far too much sense for the city to be able to handle. Consider what you're dealing with.
As a property owner and taxpayer in Richmond County, I have a difficult time understanding how the city of Augusta can even contemplate awarding a contract for the Webster Detention Center construction to a company that is not the low bidder. If the city is short of funds for its operation, why is it even considering a bid that is $2 million more than the lowest bid?
Both companies involved in this bid are most reputable and capable, so any concern of work quality or the ability to handle the workload should not be a concern in this decision.
Maybe the city's financial problems are caused by the lack of concern in obtaining the best value for our dollar. Didn't the city recently award a bid to a company with the higher bid on a demolition project, then pay more for the work -- and then have to compensate the low bidder for not awarding them the work? As a business person, I feel this manner of thinking demands explanation.
Instead of the city finding creative ways to raise our taxes, why not make sure we are getting the most value out of the tax dollars they are managing?

I agree with mgroothand.
i dont understand how the "redevelopment" tax break was given to the latest new project on river watch. this means their taxes will not go up for twenty or thirty years. seems like a kick back to me........
Good letter, Brad. You sound like a reasonable man who would apply sound business judgement to decision making. Unfortunately for us, many of the city decision-makers have their own agendas; therefore, sound judgement does not prevail.
Agreed McGroot.
Was this contract awarded through the A-RC Procurement Department? If so, that might explain it.
It's all about who you know, they get awarded to people with connections, and don't even get me started on the kickbacks given!!! Do you think these people really care that they are screwing the citizens? As long as there is something in it for them, they could care less who they choose.
