Hiking at night

A Midsummer's Night Hike will be held at 7:30 tonight at the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, 1858 Lock and Dam Road. The evening hike is part of the Family Discovery Series. A $3 donation per family is suggested. Advance reservations are not necessary.

The Pfizer Pavilion will be open at 6:30 p.m. before the hike for anyone to bring a picnic dinner.

Transplant trends

The Georgia Transplant Foundation's Trends in Transplant Conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Medical College of Georgia Alumni Center, 919 15th St.

The free conference is an educational offering for transplant candidates, recipients, donors and their families.

Authors will visit

A Book Bash Author Visit will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Nancy Carson Library, 135 Edgefield Road, North Augusta.

More than 30 local and regional authors will be in attendance at the event to sign books. Some authors will have books available for purchase.

Jazz on the river

The Candlelight Jazz Concert Series is being held at 8 p.m. Sundays in August at the Eighth Street bulkhead at Riverwalk Augusta. Admission is $6. The concert series will feature After the Storm on Sunday and quietSTORM on Aug. 31.

Racing on the river

Paddlefest 2008 will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, on the Savannah River. The event will feature canoe and kayak races and a homemade raft competition.

The canoe and kayak races will launch from the Savannah Rapids Pavilion, 3300 Evans to Locks Road. Check-in for the races begins at 7 a.m., with the races starting at 9 a.m.

The homemade raft competition will launch from the North Augusta Boat Ramp, Hammond's Ferry Road. Check-in for the raft race begins at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 9:30 a.m.

Deadline for advance registration is 5 p.m. Wednesday. Advance registration is $35. Registration after Wednesday is $45.

Races end at the Boat House, 101 River Front Drive. An after-party will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring a raffle and concert.

Libraries to close

All Richmond County libraries will be closed Sunday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 1, for the Labor Day weekend.
