Old London is backdrop for fundraiser for opera

The Augusta Opera Guild will capture the spirit of Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at a Sept. 4 fundraiser.

"It's going to be a London street scene with urchins selling flowers and a sketch artist," said Kelly Jarrell Day, the chairwoman for A Happening on Fleet Street at Sacred Heart Cultural Center.

Members of the Augusta Opera chorus will dress as townspeople from the era, mingle with guests and sing selections from the show.

Cal Berry will cater the event.

Ms. Day said this is the first fundraiser guild members have worked on in several years, and committee members are excited about it.

"They wanted to resurrect it," she said. "We're going to do an annual gala."

Ms. Day said about 250 people are expected to attend. Tickets are $75 and are available by calling (706) 826-4710 or at www.augustaopera.com.

Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, and Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Imperial Theatre. Tickets for the performance are $22-$51.
