ECHL releases Lynx's schedule

Season No. 11 of hockey in Augusta will begin Oct. 17 in James Brown Arena. The Augusta Lynx, who released their 2008-09 schedule Wednesday, will play host to the Mississippi Sea Wolves in a Friday night matchup at 7:30.

The 72-game schedule was released late because of the loss of the Pensacola Ice Pilots this off-season and a separate dispute between the Lynx and Charlotte Checkers regarding game locations. The final product gave the Lynx 26 weekend games at home, including three in a row on the days immediately after Christmas and one against the Gwinnett Gladiators on New Year's Eve.

"Obviously, we asked for (the New Year's Eve game) because we're trying to turn that into a positive tradition around here. We've had a lot of fun with that in the past," Lynx co-owner and general manager Dan Troutman said. "I think we're probably slightly improved from where we were last year."

The Lynx will experience a dream month in February when nine of 12 games will be played at home, including six of seven weekend games. March, on the other hand, has only one weekend home game.

"I think the changes from the original version probably cost us a little bit," Troutman said.

The schedule pits the Lynx against their five ECHL South Division opponents in 65 of their games. Outside the division, the Lynx will face Dayton three times, Elmira twice and Reading and Trenton once each.

PLAYER SINGINGS: The Lynx have signed two more players. Veteran defenseman Jamie McKinven and rookie forward Scott Thauwald will join the team for training camp in early October.

Thauwald, a rookie out of Colorado College, has never been to Augusta and won't get much name recognition early on, but Lynx fans are familiar with his former college teammates, including Aaron Slattengren and James Brannigan, members of last season's Lynx team,

McKinven, who played for the Lynx last season, will be hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's injury-plagued season. The defenseman missed five months with a knee injury.

McKinven's injury should have

McKinven's injury should have ended his career. He worked hard, attended every game and returned to the ice. He is a gentleman among ruffians; I am glad he is returning to the Lynx.
