CAMDEN, S.C. - Clara Eddy Hamilton Schoenborn died Saturday August 9, 2008. Formerly of Silver Spring, Maryland, she resided in Camden for the past eight years at Morningside and recently at the Karesh Wing of the Kershaw County Medical Center. The widow of Dr. Henry W. Schoenborn, she was the daughter of Dr. William Ferguson Hamilton and Helen Folsom Dula Hamilton of Augusta, Ga. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, David Pierce Hamilton and Dr. William Ferguson Hamilton, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Mary Margaret Hamilton Calk of Camden and nine nieces and nephews including Deborah Hamilton Davis and William Ferguson Hamilton III both of Augusta, Ga., David Ralph Hamilton of Auburn, Ala., Patricia Hamilton Springle of Beaufort, N.C., and Jonathan Hamilton of Apex, N.C. and fifteen grandnieces and nephews. Mrs. Schoenborn was born in Stamford, Conn. March 14, 1923, attended schools in Augusta, Ga. and graduated from Tubman High School as class valedictorian. At the time of her graduation from the University of Georgia she held the highest grade point average ever held by a woman student at the university. She received her master's degree from the University of Illinois where she was awarded a doctorate in zoology at the age of 21. After a stint of teaching at the University of Georgia, Mrs. Schoenborn accepted the position of Study Section administrator at the National Institute of Health. This included evaluating research capabilities of medical colleges and universities for N.I.H. grants. For many years she was a member of the board of directors at the Montgomery County General Hospital in Maryland. She was an accomplished artist, inveterate gardener, and world traveler. In lieu of services, her family will gather for a private remembrance reunion at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, 460 S. Fair Street, Camden, SC 29020.
