Woman reports rape by unknown assailant

A Hephzibah woman told police she was raped on Lock and Dam Road in Augusta last week.

The woman said a man she didn't know approached her vehicle and distracted her by calling out her son's name.

The attacker, who was wearing stockings over his face, forced the woman out of her vehicle and raped her about 7:45 p.m. Aug. 4, she said.

The woman said she didn't report the attack until Saturday night for personal reasons, but she said she did want to prosecute.

Boy accidentally kills himself with handgun

A 14-year-old Martinez boy accidentally shot himself in the head Saturday night while playing with a handgun, Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins said.

Richard Mixon, 14, of Inverness Way in the West Lake subdivision, died a little after 10 p.m., Mr. Collins said. He is the son of area attorney John L. Mixon III and Mary Mixon.

The rising Lakeside High School ninth-grader and three friends were at his Martinez home while his parents were away, said Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris. The boys were playing with a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber handgun.

"I don't think the young man intentionally took his life," Mr. Collins said.

2 intruders force way into woman's house

Two armed intruders forced their way into a home on Sumac Drive in south Augusta early Sunday, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report.

When the homeowner opened her front door shortly after midnight, one of the intruders fired into the air and entered the house, according to a Richmond County police report.

After searching a bedroom, the intruders took the woman's cell phone and ordered her and two other women into a bathroom.

Police search upsets crowd, brings arrests

Two men were arrested during a party in Edgefield on Saturday night.

After Edgefield city police arrived at a home on Moragne Street between 9 and 11 p.m. looking for a suspect in a theft, the crowd grew disorderly, said police Lt. Mike Cockrell.

He said police weren't looking to break up the party, but the situation escalated as they waited for a tow truck to remove a vehicle that police said held the stolen items.

Gunshots were heard from behind the home, and police used a Taser on one person. When the person's brother grew irate, police sprayed Mace. County police arrested Xavier Rouse and Deangelo Rouse, according to Lt. Cockrell.

No further details were available. Edgefield County police didn't respond to phone calls Sunday.

Mr. & Mrs. Mixon, Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Having lost a child at the tender age of 18, I know you will need lots of prayers and keep your faith. At the young age of 14, you and his friends that were with him will have a struggle, but with Your God and Church family taking care of you, it will help. It is difficult and will be for years to come. Love one another always.
God Bless and keep you.

It seems like the boy's parents would have their gun locked up in the first place. Young kids !

patriciathomas

How sad the gun accident is. For those of us that own handguns and have children, it's never too soon to start teaching gun safety and use. Part of gun safety is respect for what the gun can do.

Drunks get rowdy at a party and decide to challenge the police? How smart is that?

My prayers go out to the Mixon family. My daughter attended pre-k with Richard many years ago. Everyone please remember how short life is so dont take any hour for granted. Make sure your family and friends know that you love them. Remember - John and Mary Mixon wont get another chance to tell Richard how much they love him. Those of you with guns in the house, please use safety and caution. It can happen to anybody. Be blessed people.

My heart goes out to the family as well.I have an 8 year old and my husband has a few shot guns and he was taught all about gun safety before the guns were brought in.The guns stay locked in a gun safe and the bullets are in a separate place.

asustudent75

God Bless the Mixon family. What a sad and tragic way to start the school year. Guns are to be respected...I totally agree with patrica thomas' comments.

Does_it_really_matter

Mary, Richard, Bobby - My heart is broken and my prayers are with you all.

nightcop

Mr. Mixon had taught his son about gun safety and kept the guns locked up, but kids will do stupid crap. He knew better!

freeshy2006

Oh my goodness... a white boy did this??? If it had been a black boy noone would be lprayin for anyone, you'd all be advocating to have the black parents locked up. You should all be ashamed of yourselves!

HYPOCRITES 08

There is no need to bring race into this situation, sometimes it i better not to comment even if you feel what you want to say is true. Just like in the situation of the children in Burke County, negative comments will not help.

cn683

freeshy2006 - its people like you that keep the "racist" era around. if anyone needs to grow up - it is you. the dad had the gun locked up - not out on the table or something. the child got the keys and got into the safe. this is a horrible accident. the child didnt not mean to take his life. my prayers are with the family............and with freeshy2006 (someone needs to pray for you!)

mom2mia

Carolinagirl - Don't assume you know all the details. The gun was in a LOCKED room in a LOCKED gun safe.

FIRE, where is the story about the children in Burke Co.?

RockyMayer

Maybe families with children should stop purchasing/keeping guns in their homes.. obviously, locking them away is not working.

corgimom

I raised a boy. 14 year old boys think they are invincible and nothing is more fun than to do than something you are not supposed to do. What a terrible tragedy, and my deepest sympathies to the Mixon family.

mable8

freeshy2006: Your ignorance is showing; are you certain you want this to become public knowledge???

js_ee

Nevermind FIRE, I found it.

WAG

My heart goes out to this family. But if the gun was in a locked room and it was locked up how did he get it??? Not much point in locking it up if the kids can get to the key. Because being kids they will try it...What a tragedy.

christian134

Children are very resourceful and ingenious...Most of our babies are bred on the computers so to unlock a lock doesn't seem to be much of a problem if they really want to get into something...All any of us can do is to try to outsmart them and pray...Deepest sympathies and prayers for the family and friends...

me too

My heart is broken for the Mixon family - I can't imagine the heartache they are going through at this time. Again, I'd hope that the community will be with them, and not add to their burden with unjust remarks or criticisms. This could happen to anyone's child. And if you're thinking "not my child", think again, just think again.

Well said!!

It must be very tragic, indeed, to lose a child. What glaringly different comments from folks between the loss of the Morris child and the Mixon child. No matter what the geographical location, there are two sets of greiving parents.

If the gun was locked up and in a safe then the boy had to have had access to the safe, so whats the point in having it locked up. I do agree with one comment, if this had been a poor white family or a black family the comments would not be the same, they would all be down grading the family. I am so sorry this happened but the parents are to blame for not having the gun safe and the gun secured. Just goes to show the hypocritical mentality of the posts we see day to day. It was a tragidy about the baby who died last week but look at those post, why because they assumed the family was trash, she was neglectful in what she did, just like not securing the gun properly was neglectful. My heart indeed goes out to this family for their loss but social status should not matter when posting. A tragidy is the same for all reguardless of whether you have money or not...

When our kids were at home, we kept our loaded gun in a locked box in our bedroom, and the bedroom door had a deadbolt lock. We kept our door keys and box keys on our keyrings, and kept them locked in the bedroom at night and out of reach of anyone else in the daytime.

whyme

I am constantly reminding my 13 year old that it only takes a split second of making a bad judgment call for a tragedy to happen. You can't read other drivers minds or know if a storm will hit, both causing losses, for example. But I try to encourage my child to avoid situations or be aware of potential accidents or incidents when out or around friends. Nothing could have been done in this sad case, I'm sure, but continued education on these topics can only help.

gagirl40

I fully support the 2nd amendment and everyone's right to own guns, but this isn't a 2nd amendment issue. Sadly we have repeatedly seen that guns and children don't mix, even when guns are locked up and children have been taught gun safety. I don't have children in my house anymore but I personally wouldn't have a gun in my house now because we drink and have friends who come over that drink. We don't have knock down drag out parties, and there has never been a fight at my house. But I am responsible enough to realize that alcohol and guns don't mix and things happen sometimes for absolutely no reason and can't be predicted. That's our choice. It makes sense to us. Maybe Rocky is right, people with children shouldn't have guns in the house. You may think you have taught your child all about gun safety, but children are unpredictable and you can never be sure of what they will do. That said, My heart goes out to the entire Mixon family. This is a tragedy, a senseless tragedy by a teenager who, like so many other teenagers, thought he was invincible. There is no blame to be placed on anyone. The guns were locked up and the parents thought they were safe. They acted responsibly.

I sure hope the Mixons aren't arrested like parents in the past have been for similar circumstances. I hope the DA isn't over zealest on this case.
