We should tap our huge oil reserves

  • Follow Letters

The lies being spread about the time required to increase our oil production continue unabated by the Democrats. Here are some interesting facts that you never hear:

- The Alaskan Pipeline/Prudhoe Bay development was as controversial as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is today. The Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act passed Congress in 1973. Work began that winter, and oil began flowing in the summer of 1977 after building the 900-mile pipeline -- a little over three years, not 10 years.

ANWR only needs a 70-mile pipeline to connect to the existing pipeline. It would take one winter to accomplish this. Oil could start flowing in 12-18 months. The existing pipeline is not near capacity, and needs additional product to keep it operational. Also, near-shore and offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and California can produce oil in 12-18 months.

- None of the environmental concerns expressed about Prudhoe Bay and the pipeline have occurred 25 years later.

- Alaska has received $50 billion in royalties during this time -- 80 percent of their state revenue. We send to Arabs and other assorted tin-pot dictators $30 billion per month that our state and local economies, and individual Americans, could be receiving from the jobs created by producing our own energy.

- Offshore and Alaska drilling would tap close to 100 billion barrels of oil, and the Bakken Oil Field in Montana, North Dakota and Canada holds more oil in each of the three locations than Saudi Arabia's reserves. This doesn't include the 2 trillion barrels of oil in the Rocky Mountain shale deposits.

We can drill our way out of this oil shortage that is destroying our economy, in less than two years. Remember, a vote for any other Democrat running for the House is a vote for Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House -- and for $6- to $10-a-gallon gas in the next two years.

This is a one-issue election year: Save our economy, and our nation.

And just like our city requires someone to answer questions about how much things will cost, you have to also admit, it would cost them to answer some questions about the environmental impact this will have on animals and vegetation to get to that oil reserve. Let me put it to you another way, you don't know about how it impacts drinking water when you dig for gold in the mountains of Georgia do you? But you want the gold anyway and you think that having gold will do nothing for your drinking water right? Oil has that same type of bearing on the environment. I agree, we should drill for that oil, but more information is needed at this time and nobody is willing to tell us the whole story. Now, before you start with your name calling hear me out...If we run out of Polar Bears at the expense of our oil drilling, what impact would it have on things? Can you promise that oil spills in the water will be avoided? Can you promise the oil spills won't harm whales that are endangered? I want energy too, but I am NOT willing to give up my drinking water for it, cause this is not something you can guarantee me in the future!

Did you check our Senator Saxby Special Interest Chambliss on the Rush Show?? He's with Obama, Pelosi, & Reid.. Windfall taxes on oil & drill offshore in 4 (without oil) states if the state agrees. This RINO has knifed John McCain & President Bush in the back.. Term Limits Now, Term Limits NOW

DE2, education is not bad. I promise, it won't hurt a bit.

patriciathomas

You're right Ga Values. Isakson, Chambliss, and Graham are all Rino sellouts interested only in their personal power and fortune. All need to be voted out.

Pat, you know nothing about the environment anyway, shouldn't you be in school today?

The U.S. has a worthy amount of oil, but not enough to sustain us. Canada has an oil supply that matches the world's total supply in the Athabasca Tar Sands but these oil sands (Venezula has as large one too) are not a ready supply of oil and in fact the technology to render the oil is only now being developed. Canada does have the only oil sands readily surface mineable, and although expensive to attain it would be well worth the while. The U.S. should make a pact with Canada to help develop the technology and attain the oil for mutual benefit. The largest recoverable oil field are in the Persian Gulf and Western Siberia. Oil can be recovered in environmentally friendly ways but there is always risks of oil spills but that is the price we pay for an oil dependent society. Oil dependence isn't going away as long we are industrialized nations. If we run out of polar bears that maybe natural. It is called evolution, and extinctions are a part of the process. Without the dinosaurs extinction we wouldn't be here. 99.9% of the critters that have lived on the planet are extinct. Humans and climate change have precipitated the extinction of countless species-like the wooly mammoth.

Should someone tell de2 that they are already drilling in Canada, we already have numerous studies done on the effects of drilling in Alaska and off shore? While her enthusiasm is commendable, her research is lacking. This is not meant to be an insult or attack. Many times great things have occured as a result of foolish endeavors. If she starts some of the petitions she talks about, I would hope she would foward them to all of us.

DeborahElliott2

I did, you toss them aside in the trash and I have to start over!

DE2, yeah I remember the Alaskan pipeline crap....hmm now lets look at something you bleeding hearts totally miss...HISTORY (the study of WHAT HAPPENED). Despite whining excuses of what WOULD HAPPEN and the disasters that would befall the critters.....shockingly 30 someodd years later...the CARIBOU heards are (heres the shocking part you libidinous twit) GROWING due to the heat generated by the pipeline they are growing. All the other predictions of GLOOM and DOOM were miserably overcome.....Okay now here is a book to read "Trashing the Enviornment by Dixie Lee Ray. A well footnoted and referenced book that is as accurate as it was the day Dr. Ray wrote it.

There is an email circulating debunking the enviornmentalists' stand on drilling in Anwar. Part of the email is untrue, but the descriptions of the drilling site, etc are true. http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/a/anwar.htm

DEII, if you are going to blather nonsense here, just shut up. Otherwise, do the research and you will find that the environmental impact in Alaska/ANWR have been answered and is negligible to none. In fact, wild life has increased along the current pipeline because it provides heat in the winter not there before. BTW, just how much impact on drinking water has mining of gold in North GA caused? Specifics please.

Saxby was on the Neal Borz show this morning, he was worse than on Rush. Basically he knows what's right & we stupid VOTES just need to shut up & quit calling his office. Some "Conservative" he has sold out to Pelosi & Reid.. Wonder what his LOBBIST SON BO is going to do when Saxby is our Ex-Senator??

A better energy source for the U.S. is natural gas, which is mostly methane, but other gases too. Clathrate hydrates or gas hydrates are abundant on the ocean floor and also in the Canadian artic Mallik gas hydrate field. Methane is caged as a hydrate and the technology is now available to release this energy source from the hydrates.

Supposed we did get the oil from Alaska Do we have the refinery capacity to do anything with it? The writer mentions Montana and North Dakoda, but I do not hear politicians mentioning them, or other areas where the oil companies have already been handed land.
