Nonprofits waiting for an energy policy

  • Follow Letters

The cost of energy has gotten out of hand. I talk to people all the time who complain about their energy bills -- imagine trying to run a center that has 100 people going in and out. It's all I can do to pay the electric bill.

As an advocate for Augusta's families, I can attest to the hardships many of them are facing. Through my work at Friendship Community Center, I do all I can to help alleviate these stresses, but I can't do it alone. Someone higher up has to take responsibility.

Case in point: Congress is sitting on energy legislation that could help us with the high costs. Instead of thinking about those who really need the help, it seems our legislators are worried about how it will affect the oil companies.

It's time to get away from this kind of thinking. We need energy security, and we're only going to get that through increased domestic energy production!

The longer we leave our energy demands in the hands of foreign countries, the longer we'll be subject to paying whatever they ask for it.

My question is, how come we the people don't get a petition started to force the hand of congress? We did elect them in that office and since voting them in and out just doesn't get much done, we need to petition our congressmen and take that petition to a congressional hearing so that people will know we mean business! What else can we do? We don't seem to get our voices heard anywhere else, and if we stone them with media, would it really help? Will it make them vote on a bill?

If you feel that strong........start the petition. Stop waiting for someone else to do it.

I agree with Sister on that one, if you're gonna comment on everything here in such a manner put it to good use and start the petition!

Phylis, maybe you and DE2 ought to get together on this and solve the problem. Ya'll seem to share a common wave length.

DEII, seems it ain't "Congress" that is holding up workable, bipartisan legislation on energy, but your heroes Nancy Pilosi (who even turned off the lights and mikes in the House to prevent debate) and Dingy Harry Ried, who offers sham bills the Republicans and moderate DIMs kill. Yeah, try a petition to Pilosi and Ried. The Republicans are trying to get us to drill here and drill now which the DIMs and their econut supprters have managed to kill for decades.
