MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - John Anderson "Jack" Wells, 85, resident of 1750 Crooked Pine Drive, formerly of Greenwood, widower of Mary Ellen Carter Wells died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at NHC Parklane in Columbia. Born in Greenwood July 2, 1923, he was a son of the late Claude Lamar and Elizabeth Nichols Wells. A 1941 graduate of Greenwood High School, Mr. Wells was a US Army Veteran having served during WWII where he was a Prisoner of War. Escaping he returned across the Atlantic on a landing craft. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He formerly owned and operated Greenwood Pasturizing Plant until the sale to Pet Inc. He enjoyed living out his retirement in Myrtle Beach and was a member of the Surfside United Methodist Church at Surfside Beach. Mr. Wells was formerly a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Greenwood Lions Club for many years. He was preceded in death by a son, John Anderson "Andy" Wells, Jr. Surviving in addition to his son Wayne Carter Wells and wife Diane of Columbia are five grandchildren, John Anderson Wells, III, of North Augusta, Andrea L. Hyatt of Columbia, Randy Wells of Beaufort, Robert Wells of Lugoff and Russell Wells of Beaufort; seven great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 PM from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend William Robertson officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1-2 PM at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorials to Lutheran Hospice, 1505 Blanding Street, Columbia, SC 29201 in memory of Mr. Wells.
