Schools aim to fill teaching vacancies

  • Follow Metro

School starts Monday in Richmond and Columbia counties, and officials with both school systems still are interviewing candidates to fill vacant teaching positions.

One special education position and 13 elementary school positions are open in Richmond County. The school system also needs to fill three middle school and four high school positions.

Louis Svehla, a spokesman for the Richmond County school system, said substitute teachers, many of whom are retired teachers, will fill the spots until permanent teachers are hired.

Columbia County is searching for two special education teachers, which include one spot at Greenbrier Middle School and a part-time art teacher at Bel Air Elementary School.

"We're hoping that we don't get any last-minute defections" because of spouses' job transfers, said Anthony Wright, the Columbia County school system human resources executive director.

He also said two kindergarten teachers have been transferred from one school to another. A kindergarten class was eliminated at North Columbia and Euchee Creek elementary schools because of enrollment, Mr. Wright said, and River Ridge and Lewiston elementary schools added a kindergarten class each.

Mr. Svehla and Mr. Wright said it is unclear at this point how Gov. Sonny Perdue's proposal to withhold funding from state school systems would affect operations.

Last week, Mr. Perdue announced plans to defer $1.6 billion in total spending by withholding 6 percent of state funding for all agencies, including 2 percent of state funding from K-12 school systems.

About $3.3 million would be withheld from Richmond County schools and more than $2 million would be withheld from Columbia County schools.

"I can't even hazard a guess as to what that will do to us," Mr. Wright said.

However, he said the school system has little room to maneuver in its hiring because of required student-teacher ratios. Mr. Svehla agreed.

"We are going to continue to hire and fill positions as if that did not occur. These positions were already in the budget," Mr. Svehla said.

Based on enrollment projections, Richmond County has eliminated 17 unfilled teaching positions.

Joyce Stanley, the Aiken County Schools human resources director, said the school system is looking for a math teacher and a social studies teacher at Leavelle McCampbell Middle School and a part-time music instructor at North Augusta High School.

She said she hopes to have the positions filled by the time school starts Aug. 18.

Shawn Clinkscales, the director of human resources for the Edgefield County schools, said the school system has one vacancy for a math teacher at Strom Thurmond High School.

School starts in Edgefield County on Aug. 19.

As a teacher who was interested in working with the students of Richmond County I was appalled at how teacher recruitment is handled at the RCBOE. From asking applications be left with a security guard at the front desk to not following up on promises to call I am not a bit surprised that RCBOE still has positions to fill. Specifically I don’t know what Gwen Rountree does with her time as she counts on her secretary doing most of her job and lies to cover herself instead of just being professional, admitting mistakes and doing her job for the betterment of the schoolchildren of Richmond County.

I know what you mean, I wanted to be a substitute, but well, as you can see, I am still waiting...and waiting...did they lose my paperwork?

Lord DE2, what would we do if you did not have the time to be writing here everyday. We would miss you, don't you know. NOT

The same can be said about the high school personnel director at the Board of Edu in Augusta.

LadyCisback

I agree with the first two posts.. That security guard in the RCBOE is incompetent..

Could one of those Richmond County middle school teaching positions be for science? I know of one middle science teacher receiving excellent evaluations, however she was informed in a cowardly manner that her services were not needed at the school "not a team player" which really translates “I am intimidated by your experience, skills and teacher/leadership ability.” Out of discuss an excellent teacher/leader retired (who just might be in Aiken County helping them to make AYP). Administrators cannot preach team collaboration, yet become intimidated when the process works, a truly effective administrator recognize good teacher/leaders and are skilled in working with them to benefit the students and school. No principal should be allowed to ask a teacher who has an excellent teaching record, to leave a school without a fair mediation process, incidents of this type happens too often. These types of incidents are not just morale killers for the teacher involve, but also for other concerned teachers who know that their school has lost an experienced and effective teacher (who are hard to find) because the school principal used poor judgment.

Professional overpaid baby sitters.

if the teacher was dismissed for not being a team player, there had to have been other mitigating factors: "not a team player" isn't one of the reasons a principal can dismiss a teacher. if she wasn't offered a contract, she must be in her first 3 contract years as a teacher; otherwise, a valid reason (even "other sufficient cause" can be used to dismiss a teacher) must be given. no decent teacher would allow the "not a team player" excuse to prevent them from helping children. if what you write is the whole truth, factfinder, encourage your friend to seek legal counsel and fight for her job; her students deserve her best efforts.

I see we have a security guard at the RCBOE. I wonder if we have a potential terrorist threat the wouldn't it be logical each school would be a target also? I say get rid of the security guard or put one at each entrance of every school. By the way, does the RCBOE still buy bottled water and if so why don;t they drink out of the same water fountainf the public has to use? I am paying enough for their little perks and need some tax relief.

Teacher Problems, for every teacher that is concerned about the students educatuon, there are 10 that don't care!! I have worked in a school system for 32 years. Thinks get worse every year. A high dollar degree and doing nothing.

Bored in GA

On the issue of the 3.3 million loss....Let's see they have cut maintenance and transportation's pay, several times this last year..let's cut that again to cover the cost. BECAUSE undoubtably it cost The real laborers less to live than DR. Bedden! HAHA

Think back on all of the fights, bomb threats, and other behavioral problems/criminal activity that teachers had to deal with last year before you call them overpaid baby sitters. All of them need a raise for having to deal with the demons some people call children and send to schools.

becblueyz

Ilet . . . Professional Overpaid Babysitters? You must not have children or else you'd know that an average babysitter makes about $5 an hour per child. multiply that times approx 20 kids per class and then times 6 hours a day (we'll subtract from the regular 8 hour day for lunch and recess, etc). Then take your total and mulitply it times 5. That is what an average babysitter would make that week. Take that number and multiply it times 190 for the # of days in a school year. . . I don't know of a single teacher who make $570k a year!

Right on jackfruitpaper833, you are exactly right, very unorganized at the Board of Education office as if they are some high and mighty over achieving school district

Edgefield

iletuknow If you think that teachers are over paid baby siters, First get your kids out of school. You take care of them. Second, go to school and become a teacher, You act like it is a easy job with high pay.

lifelongresidient

i feel for all teachers, doing an admirable job for less work and not able to enforce their own classrooms w/out adaquate support from principals or higher administration. so they must endure babysitting instead of teaching because of the triffling and SORRY parent who send their children to scholl not to learn but to allow someone else to raise there children. then on top of that the teachers are not supplied w/enuff resources such as school supplies so they wind up spending their own money to make up the difference, but mention sports such as football and basketball then some how millions are found to build new gyms and stadiums for schools that graduate less than 40% of their senior class and either failed to meet AYP OR IN THE CASE OF JOSEY, is STATE DIRECTED (refer to last weeks aug chronicle listing of schools and their AYP status). so the question should be asked why aren't the teachers benefitting for their dedication with increase pay, if gyms and stadiums can be built for 2 of the worse schools in the county can't money "be found" to pay teachers what they deserve?

iletuknow

Until teachers are paid on performance judged by a team of parents and administrators they have little incentive if the child advances or not.

factfinder

jaschild- the teacher had over 30 years of service (hence her decicing to retire in protest), she did go through protocol by meeting with the appropriate level personnel and making a formal complaint and was told that her contract did not guaranttee that she would be assigned to the same school. However she was told that the principal did not exercise proper protocol and a letter would be placed in the principal's file (Right). I am surprised that you actually think that there is a "REAL Due Process" process for teachers. Why do you think that so few students want to go to college to become teachers, they witness first hand how teachers are treated and they know that "Due Process" is a joke, and in many cases use this fact to what they think is their advantage. A large percentage of persons entering the professional now did not initially major in education, Of those persons entering education as a second profession many will work in the classroom just long enought to get the experience to become a principal or some other type of leadership role, ther farther educators are removed from students, the more money they make.

DeborahElliott2 I too just applied for the substitute position and several other positions that I qualify for. I have yet to hear from anyone at the board. I also thought that it was a little unusal to give your application to the security guard. Since I have not heard from the board for even an interview I think I will try another county.

workingmom

That might be a good idea Unknown. I know for a fact that if you are good at your job as a substitute, you WILL be called frequently.

ConcernedEducator

They need a lot of substitutes because they aren't professional in how they recruit amd treat certified staff.
