Soccer team places 4th at Disney event

In Orlando, Fla., a team featuring local boys finished in fourth place at the 3v3 Challenge soccer national championship last weekend at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

The Sambas, which is made up of Parker Campbell , Austin Grubbs , Drew Moss , Jack Hyatt and Cole Williams and Atlanta's Skyler Davis , participated in the 8-and-under division.

The team will compete in the Kick-It 3v3 regional tournament this weekend at Blanchards Woods Park.

- In Alexandria, La., the Columbia County Dixie Belles were eliminated from the Dixie Belles Softball World Series Tuesday night, falling 5-1 to Montgomery, Ala.

They finished the 13-15 girls tournament with a 3-2 record. Alabama will meet the winner of Tuesday's game between Madison, Tenn., and Liberty, Texas, tonight for the championship.

Columbia County's 11- and 12-year-old Ponytails team was knocked out after two games.

SportSouth to air Gamecocks events

SportSouth has announced a multiyear TV rights deal for regional cable and satellite rights to broadcast several University of South Carolina events.

The agreement includes eight live men's basketball games, four women's basketball games and eight baseball games each year.

The deal includes 12 "encore presentations" of South Carolina football.

SportSouth would also broadcast the weekly shows for football coach Steve Spurrier , first-year men's basketball coach Darrin Horn , first-year women's basketball coach Dawn Staley and baseball coach Ray Tanner .

- Andrew Gavin , the assistant sports information director at USC Aiken, is leaving to take a position at the University of Central Florida.

Gavin will be assistant director for communications.

- Versus will televise 23 college football games this season, up from 19 last season, including five Ivy League games.

Horse Racing

Curlin headed back to dirt for next race

Curlin is heading back to dirt for his next race -- the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga -- but his majority owner said that doesn't necessarily mean the turf experiment is over.

Jess Jackson announced that the reigning Horse of the Year will next run in the $500,000 Grade I Woodward on Aug. 30.

Curlin made his turf debut last month, finishing second in the Man o' War Handicap at Belmont Park. The 4-year-old colt has been training at Saratoga in upstate New York this summer.

Boykins signs deal with team in Italy

Unrestricted free agent Earl Boykins signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal to play with Virtus Bologna of the Italian league, the latest NBA player to sign a deal with an overseas club.

Andy Bountogianis of the Cleveland-based Mark Termini Associates Inc. sports agency, confirmed the signing.

- Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Farmar , the NBA's only Jewish player, showed his dribbling, shooting and slam-dunking skills at a clinic in southern Israel for Jewish and Arab kids.

College Basketball

Bulldogs announce 2008-09 schedule

Georgia will follow up its SEC Tournament title in 2008 with one of its most demanding schedules of the Dennis Felton era.

The Bulldogs will play in the Preseason NIT and face nonconference opponents from the ACC (Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech), Big Ten (Illinois) and Big 12 (Missouri).

The Bulldogs will travel to Purdue for the Preseason NIT on Nov. 17-19. The winner of a four-team tournament will play in the national semifinals in New York.

Georgia plays Albany State in an exhibition on Nov. 7. The season opens at home against USC Upstate on Nov. 14.
