Man shot after holding 13-year-old boy hostage

FLORENCE --- Deputies killed a man who was holding his ex-girlfriend's 13-year-old son hostage near Florence.

Florence County deputies said they had to shoot 40-year-old Thomas John Dick on Monday to protect the boy. The State Law Enforcement Division was investigating.

Mr. Dick was on bond from Hendersonville, N.C., where police said he beat his ex-girlfriend at a motel.

He was not supposed to contact the woman, but drove to her job Monday before barricading himself in her home with her son, police said.

ROD SHEALY, political consultant and publisher of six small newspapers, announced in an online column Tuesday that he has a cancerous brain tumor.
