EVANS, Ga. - Mariam 'Mickey' Pierce Walker, 94, of 4275 Owens Road, Evans, Georgia entered into rest at home, August 2, 2008. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 50 years, James P. Walker, Sr. and her eldest son, James Walker, Jr. She was the daughter of Benjamin Eugene Pierce and Essie Hankinson Pierce. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 11:00am, at Westover Memorial Park. The Rev. Rob Watkins of Covenant Presbyterian Church will officiate. Visitation will be at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 1134 Telfair St., Tuesday August 5 from 6-8pm. She is survived by her son, Benjamin Pierce Walker and wife, Gail of Sandy Springs, Ga., her daughters, Martha W. Roberts and husband, J. Haley; and Virginia (Ginger) W. Cornes and husband, William (Bill), both of Augusta. She was also survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Mrs. Walker was a graduate of the previous Tubman High School and Augusta College where she was majoring in classical courses. She also attended Mrs. Garrens's Business School for 2 years. Before the birth of her children, she served as secretary to Postmaster Ben Lester. She also handled forms for Civil Service jobs when she served as secretary to Ms. Gary Sims, FERA administrator for 13 counties. She worked for several years with the "Hi-Neighbor Program" which welcomed new comers to Augusta during the war years. She was an active homemaker for the remaining years of her life. Mrs. Walker was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She was very active in the community and was a past member of the Junior League of Augusta and the Augusta Country Club. She was a Charter member of the Augusta Assembly and the Wayside Garden Club. She volunteered with the University Hospital's Women's Board and served on the Board of Directors of Mary Warren Home in Augusta. During the 1950's, she was an active volunteer with the YWCA designing and sewing costumes for Ms. H. Price's numerous performances. She was also an active volunteer for the Red Cross. Mrs. Walker was the last survivor of eight siblings. Her brothers were Benjamin E. Pierce, Sr., Judge Franklin H. Pierce, Judge Hinton R. Pierce and Philip M. Pierce all of Augusta and her sisters Frances P. Watson of Lakeland, Florida; Dorothy P. Gunderson of Santa Barbara, California and Mary Emma P. Bonfield of Miami, Florida.
