Chamberlain gave up five earned runs and eight hits to the Rangers before leaving with two outs in the fifth inning.

- Manager Joe Girardi announced that rookie right-hander Dan Giese would replace right-hander Darrell Rasner as Friday night's starter against the Angels.

RAYS: Left fielder Carl Crawford and shortstop Jason Bartlett were both out of the starting lineup Monday night against Cleveland because of injuries.

Crawford has a sore left hamstring. It's not known whether he will be able to start today.

Bartlett hurt his right index finger Sunday when he took a pitch off the finger when he tried to bunt.

ATHLETICS: Third baseman Eric Chavez will have surgery next week to repair fraying of the labrum in his right shoulder, ending his season. He played in just 23 games.

WHITE SOX: Left-hander Clayton Richard has been optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.

In three starts since being called up in July, Richard was 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA.

BRAVES: Rafael Soriano was put on the 15-day disabled list Monday for the third time this season because of an inflamed right elbow.

Atlanta also promoted left-hander Francisley Bueno from Triple-A Richmond and purchased his contract.

The 27-year-old Bueno was 2-5 with a 5.02 ERA in 17 appearances, including 12 starts, at Richmond this season.

CUBS: Closer Kerry Wood will come off the 15-day disabled list in the next couple of days after a long stay because of a blister on his right index finger.

Wood threw 30 pitches to hitters from the Wrigley Field mound after warming up and getting some work done in the bullpen hours before Sunday's game against the Pirates. He said he also did some throwing Monday morning.

Manager Lou Piniella said Wood will start out in middle relief and assume the closer's role when he's ready.

Meteorologist Brad Churchill said that 60 to 80 mph winds were expected.

ROCKIES: Purchased the contract of Steve Register from Triple-A Colorado Springs and designated Valerio De Los Santos for assignment.
