I wonder if Rodney Howell knew the woman and baby or if it was a random act. Sounds like the government is building some new free housing units on Sandbar Ferry Rd.

Police cite woman for selling items on porch
Police cited an Augusta woman Tuesday, saying she was selling merchandise from her home without a business license.
Tawanda Denise Cole, 31, of the 500 block of Moore Avenue, was accused of selling products typically sold at convenience stores, according to Richmond County sheriff's Vice Squad Investigator Tony Hyatt. Police responded to Ms. Cole's Moore Avenue home after being notified of what they said were illegal sales of items such as cold drinks, snacks and candy bars.
Police said they confiscated a large freezer, two full-size refrigerators and produce.
Atlanta woman dies in single-vehicle wreck
A suburban Atlanta woman died Tuesday in a single-vehicle wreck at Bobby Jones Expressway and Gordon Highway.
Saulena Dee Vilano, 38, of Avery, Ga., died after losing control of a 1991 Chevy Blazer, authorities said. She died of blunt-force trauma to the head, said Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald.
Ms. Vilano was traveling eastbound on Gordon Highway when she attempted to drive onto an on-ramp for Bobby Jones. Mr. McDonald said it appears she entered too fast, and the vehicle flipped.
Two children inside the vehicle survived and were treated at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Mr. McDonald said.
Owner claims stray horse
The owner of an 11-year-old brown mare that had been at the Aiken Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for more than a week claimed the horse Tuesday morning after reading an Augusta Chronicle article about the stray horse.
Aiken County animal control officers found the horse near Atomic Road in Beech Island and brought the lost animal to the Aiken SPCA.
"Because it (the horse) was lost in the county, she didn't know to call us," said Gary Willoughby, the executive director of the shelter. "She had called a few other places, but didn't know we had horses here."
The horse's owner was required to show proof of ownership, such as veterinarian records or a photograph, before the shelter would release the animal. The black and white Pointer, Rudy, that also was mentioned in the article went to Molly's Militia.
The dog was placed in a foster home, and the animal rescue organization is working to find Rudy a permanent home.

Well so much for the neighborhood (old lady) selling candy, cookies, frozen cups out of her house. Those use to be the days, sad you got to have a license to sell penny candy now out of your house. Those were the good ol days.
I never had that in my neighborhood, but she can't be turning that big of a profit.....
Duh... Avery Georgia is a suburb of Augusta, not Atlanta. It is in Jefferson County, near Wrens. This paper just keeps getting worse.
The practice of selling drinks and candy from your home is still fairly common in parts of Augusta. Only the locals know who and where. It's just like running a liquor house. You have to be careful or the tax (license) man will come for you.
The area around James Brown Arena is a dangerous place to park a car. You know it's got to be a dangerous place to have windows.
Next to Underwood Homes is a great place for the mixed-income housing.
Seems like there is bigger crimes to worry about in Augusta than a lady selling candy, etc. out of her house.......at least she wasn't selling drugs or alcohol....
At least the woman was trying to make honest(?) money. Why not just have her purchase a license and leave her alone? I don't know the legalities of this, so I'm just asking...
Who would be that hateful to call the authorities on the Candy Lady. I remember when I was little, the Candy Lady kept us from roaming the streets to get treats. Those were the Wayne Williams days.
5:00smwhr: It's not what you do, it's what you get caught doing. Who knows what else was being sold?
naggy: If it's an A-RC residential neighborhood Code requires the property be granted an exception for a home business, it would have to have a business license, couldn't cause an increase in traffic (mail, foot or vehicle), and signs wouldn't be permitted.
I don't know about the woman who was selling candy, I think they should just make her buy a license and let her go with her stuff, but who in their right mind would put a kid in a car and leave it there? Don't they know that temperatures rise a good 20* every few seconds and can get up to 200*F in a Car?
I would think the police would have better things to do than to close someone down who is selling soft drinks and produce off their porch. Oh, I forgot, the city is not getting their little tax. Shame, Shame on the city!!!!!
I'm surprised SargentMidTown has not made any comment on the candy selling. This is in HONGKONG's area of operation.
The law is the law. Repeal the law about business licenses or support the enforcement. No one wants to live near Underwood Homes if they can pay their own rent. Maybe the guy snatching the kid has been denied visitation? The law is the law. Broken windows at JBA? Did they fire another manager illegally?
I know you are not new to the Harrisburg discussions, dani.
Reader 212 you are the one that is wrong, Avera is in Jefferson
county. Avery is in Cherokee County Northeast of Atlanta.
reader212 : Avery IS a suburb of Altanta! It is near Canton. Avera is in Jefferson County outside of Wrens.
So, reader 212 was posting before coffee this morning.
but where did the candy and ice cream and cold drinks come from??? If she has to resort to selling these items from her front porch...how can she afford to BUY them.....more to this.......in other words, how is she stocking those fridges and freezers?
EBT card ???
If she goes to sam's she can get a lot of stuff and make a very reasonable profit for some extra money. But who knows if she is contaminating them.... maybe she knows someone who works at a convience store.. my mom used to and the vendors would give her all the old stock off the shelves, they were still in date, but not for long. Who's monitoring what shes selling to make sure it isn't tainted, by her or natural spoilage, or not stored properly. If it was reported and they did nothing, then a child got sick from somethin a little past date, the county would be in a world of hurt. And with all those freezers, it wasn't just now and laters and bubble gum. Not to mention, if she is on any gov't assistance or SS and if she is and can work, then she needs to get a real job or a license. Who wouldn't want to do what she is doing. A whole lot of people would, especially stay at home mom's. The point is it is illegal and wrong in more ways than 1!!
patricia thomas i have parked by car alot of time by the james brown arena. And nothing has happend one time. Wow some people in augusta are scare of anything. Karmakills123 she probably brought the items from the store. And sold them to the little kids in the neighborhood. I had a lady once that sold icys in a paper cup for 50 cent and a dollar. She made alot of money especially during the summer. Why do you think she has to be doing something else. That is the question you need to ask yourself. Why can't she just be selling candy like alot of other people do. Wouldn't the police have found something else if candy, soda, and other things weren't the only thing.
It is not that serious!! We don't live in a huge city. We have to drive to get to most places. We don't have a MARTA and the city buses don't come to were some of us live. The "candy lady" provides treats for children who might not have a store nearby or a car to get there. When I was younger we went to the candy lady after school, in the summertime, and whenever we had extra money. I am upset because you all are getting mad about what she is doing. She is not hurting anyone by selling candy out of her home. She is helping the children in her neighborhood. Half of the time it is not about making a profit. I know that law is law, but what is law enforcement doing, patrolling the streets looking for old ladies selling candy? I see people blatantly selling drugs on the street yet no one stops them.
confiscated her freezer and refrigerators....give me a break. Doesn't the vice squad have anything else to do ?
The name of the town is "Avera", not "Avery".
I'm glad to hear that Richmond County is cracking down on ILLEGAL convenience stores. It's NOT FAIR to reputable businesses who go to the expense of building a store, stocking and staffing it, all while paying taxes to the county and state. I'm really tired of those who continually defend CRIMINALS. How would YOU feel had YOU invested hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars to build a licensed, LEGAL business and then have somebody competing with none of the overhead that you had? No wonder Richmond county is heading into the toilet with THAT kind of thinking.
A woman dies, leaving three small children, two of which were in the car with her and all you can think of is the spelling of the name of a town in Jefferson County. News Flash, you need to be praying for those three children, who are without a mother. How shallow are you.
