Liberals have it wrong on gun laws

  • Follow Letters

The outpouring of hysterical, knickers-in-a-knot letters from the left in response to a slight loosening of Georgia's gun laws was predictable, and understandable. They're afraid -- and rightly so. It's how they feel, and only feelings count, if you're a liberal.

Understand, to a liberal, self-discipline and personal responsibility are nebulous, arcane, outmoded, antisocial concepts. To them, controlling behavior is the job of the state. This is why they fear that anyone carrying a concealed weapon will use it indiscriminately. They believe this (feelings in the future tense) because it's precisely how they would act.

Ignorant of history, the left feels only when the state controls all the guns (such as Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, Mao's China, Pol Pot's Cambodia, Saddam Hussein's Iraq and Sudan's Darfur -- not to mention Washington, D.C.) can an unarmed citizenry feel safe. Sure has worked so far, hasn't it?

I find it demeaning and insulting to all sane people out there that the writer assumes the left has a monopoly on the anti-gun stance. He is himself apparently ignorant of the fact that the United States is second only to Brazil (the second largest arms exporter in the Western Hemisphere, most of which are smuggled back into the country) in firearm-related homicides. What I find funny about the whole situation is that one of the reasons the amendment was put into the Constitution was so that an enlightened and motivated populace would have the technical ability to rise up, exert pressure on, and even overthrow, a blatantly corrupt government. Y'know, like...now.

The very idea that You liberal morons are anything but 100% anti gun is ridiculous. Hard working people like me have been fighting for relaxation in our gun laws for many years through the NRA, and most recently georgiacarry.org Maybe justus4 is concerned that if he robs a white lady, he now has a real chance of getting his own "justus".

Conservatives want guns because they live in fear and demand the status quo because of fear of change. Liberals just lack any intelligence, logic, or ability to reason. Fortunately it is a normal distribution (bell curve) so the bulk of people don't fall into these extremes of lunacy. Of course studies show that what the U.S. calls liberalism (which isn't) appears to be growing. Demonstrating the dumbing down of America. hee, hee, hee.

I am not against owning a gun, but there are some issues that would make it difficult for me to own one. I have kids at home, and I know that even keeping a gun unloaded does little to deter an attacker from my home. Keeping it in a car does nothing for me except give cops the excuse of why to stop me when going through a vehicle inspection, and I prefer having something handy when attacked. I can think of ways to defend myself other than a gun, but having one can help in certain circumstances.

Bizarro, what Americans call "gay" isn't either, but we know what is meant.

Bizarro, without fear there is no need for caution.

I don't think that liberals are really the factor in this debate anyway. Either you like guns or you do not. In my family, my wife hates the idea of a gun in the house, let alone in the car. However, I have probably 20 weapons, was a member of the UGA rifle team, grew up hunting, and understand the Constitutional implications. But, that does not make my wife a liberal, just afraid of guns. And honestly, the idea that anyone can go buy a gun and carry it around with them, even if they do not have much practice using them or maintaining them, is a little bit scary to me too.

I agree Patricia there is a healthy amount of fear-hence the flight or fight response. A healthy fear of God, etc. As for guns, as soon as I could walk I had a BB gun and I have an arsenal that I rarely use anymore. Taught my wife how to use a shotgun loaded with buckshot when I'm out of town. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I also taught my children never to touch a gun unless you plan on killing something with it. Don't point a gun unless you plan to kill with it. Always assume a gun is loaded. As a youth I slaughtered more than my fair share of game and enjoyed every moment of the kill and good eats. I also used bow and arrow, and a sling shot. A sling shot is a deadly weapon-remember David slew Goliath. I made a sling shot rifle that I dare say would kill anything within 50-75 feet if you placed your shot correctly.

Yeah, dream on justus4, in every state in which the hoops for gun ownership has been lowered, ignorant liberals like you have prophesied carnage- dismissing the facts and labeling their opponents as uneducated rednecks or worse. Remember the shootouts in the streets headlined when Kennesaw, Georgia mandated the ownership of firearms, or the predicted slaughter when Florida dropped its requirements for concealed carry? Didn't happen, but that doesn't stop alternate-reality junkies like you and otpor from assuming -like pointed out in the letter- that other people will behave as you would if unrestrained.

As for your 'point' "these statements are played all day on the radio," I don't spend my days listening to the radio; I have an actual life. And one assumes that being unaware of what the leisure class is listening to makes me uneducated. Wow. And precisely what color is the sky in that little world you live in?
