I saw Rick McKee's cartoon in the July 20 paper about Southern states leading the nation in obesity. I could not help but notice the Yankee stereotypes of Southern people.
Could it be that the Yankees actually fear that the South will rise again? How else do you explain the endless attacks on all things Southern -- and especially our beloved Confederate Battle Flag and our Confederate heroes -- initiated by the Yankee stooges the NAACP and the Southern Poverty Law Center?
I realize not everyone from the north is a Yankee. Yankees are people regardless of origin who embrace the New England Yankee philosophy of manifest destiny, a.k.a. nation-building, in which all people are to be conquered, subjugated, indoctrinated, micromanaged and standardized -- thus reconstructed into the New England Yankee image.
If history repeats itself, and it will, the South will rise again. For some reason, Southern people would rather be governed by themselves than to be governed at the point of a Yankee bayonet. Hopefully, with the ongoing wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and soon-to-be Iran, the Yankee imperialists will let the South leave the empire in peace. But I think not. After all there is a lot of oil in Dixie.

It does make one wonder ....does the AC get so few letters that printing something like this and letting the world ridicule our fair town become a reasonable prospect? Or are they deliberately trying to smear us? Or do they think themselves so irrelevant that it doesn't matter what they print?

As a born Noo Yawka, I can tell you that Mr. Stafford is 100% correct. Southerners who honor their history and heritage are in the cross-hairs, constantly under attack by the media, cultural institutions, the government and powerful special interest groups. The weapons of choice are the malignant "race card" and the concept of "hate crimes" which apparently only certain folks like white males can commit.
Karl Marx declared that you can only conquer a people when you erase forever their uniqueness as a culture. The attempt today is to destroy "the South" as both a region and a culture forcing it forever within the homogenized secular, amoral "society" that has infected this nation and which blurs both national boundaries and cultural identity. This "society" is leading, inexorably to the demise of both the South AND the United States.
Mr. Stafford is neither drunk nor stupid. He merely points out the facts to folks who'd rather not just obediently swallow the government's Kool Aid.
Exactly how DID those yankees make southerners the fattest part of the population? Have they been caging and force-feeding those poor ignorant southerners? My God, what a diabolical plot!!
Good letter ! Of particular interest to me are some of the old cartoons which show southerners as slow walking, slow talking, and thick southern accents. And, as you might have guessed, black faces.
Also, anyone in the old cartoons who was supposed to be stupid had a southern accent.
LadyVal, sound like you have been drinking tainted kool Aid. What rational reasons would the Government have for the demise of the South and the United States. First of all I thought the South was a part of the United States, yet you listed it seperate. Only the people of the South can ever do harm to it.
I have encountered far more ignorance and racism north of the Mason-Dixon than I have south of it.
Mr. Stafford, I'm an old Southern white man, born in the South, lived here all my life. At 65 years of age, I can always use a good belly laugh in the morning to get the old circulation going. I really wish the writer of the LTE would say his nonsense into the faces of anyone in the Big Apple. He probably wouldn't make it back to Grovetown, Ga. in one piece.
Who cares ? Your precious big apple is just another cesspool north of the mason dixon. It just has the distinction of being the largest one.
Some of us in the South live on Myths. The Civil War or the War between the States was a tragedy. A Rich Man War fought by poor boys until some of them woke up and started to desert.
The South was full of poverty because slaves did all the work and many slaveowners got rich. At one time, there was more wealth in the south than the North because of slave labor..
There were thousands of poor whites who didn't
have employment. 3000 slveowners owned 95% of the wealth in the South during the 1850's.There wasn't this glorious South that has been painted in the minds of a few southerners. In the 1890's, the myth was started with the construction of the many statues of southern generals in small and medium size towns.

If I remember a great southerner playing at Agusta would rather take a penalty stroke than to mar his reputation as well as his concious,that is southern honour.Instead we have northern influanced people prostituting themselves for the almighty dollar.Reconstruction has not for the most part ended in the south.Steel bought in Birmingham,Alabama and shipped to Birmingham had to pay for shipping from Pittsberg,Pa.The true sons and daughters of the south have paid and paid dearly for the works of the the radical Republicans,carpetbaggers and scalawags.To say we forget our kin being hung during reconstruction,raped and homes pillaged,churches used as stables etc.Did the Irish ever forget the English,the Scots forget the English or any other nation that has had a boot heel on thier neck?I think not.

The Irish weren't treated any better when they got here. There is a common claim that this country's infrastructure was built on the backs of black slave labor. That is a terrible misconception. There were plenty of black men in those work camps ( ie railroad ect ) but they were vastly outnumbered by irishmen willing to do any job anywhere for darn near nothing.
