Posters helping to tell story of Signal Corps
Museum update

Pigeons, flags, radios and satellites are among the ways soldiers have communicated since the Signal Corps' founding during the Civil War.

Many pieces of military history are found in the Signal Corps Museum in Fort Gordon's Conrad Hall on Chamberlain Avenue. Recently, Director Bob Anzuoni has been augmenting the museum's collection with artwork and posters.

"Some of these posters were just advertisements. They were folded in fours and mailed. They still have the thumbtack holes in them where they were posted on bulletin boards," he said.

Original posters from World War I and World War II can get pricey.

"Some posters run several thousand dollars," he said.

They add another dimension to the telling of the Signal Corps' story, he said.

Posters from World War II urged children to buy war bonds. Their pennies and nickels could go a long way toward the effort, according to "Schools-at-War" jeep campaign posters.

For $3,000, schoolchildren could help buy an airplane, and a jeep was only $1,165.

Other new acquisitions include recruiting posters from the Cold War era.

Posters from 1959 to 1961 show how one obscure artifact was used. The experimental PRC-34 communications helmet, which had an antenna sticking out of the top, has been in a glass case for several years, Mr. Anzuoni said.

Several new posters show soldiers wearing the experimental helmet, which was quite a technological advance for its time, he said.

The Signal Corps Museum has a varied collection. Other pieces include a facsimile machine from World War II, a piece of the Berlin Wall and an Oscar won by the Signal Corps during World War II for a documentary it produced.

The museum is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
