Blythe man remains jailed, faces charges in shooting

A Blythe man remained in jail late Wednesday after being accused of shooting at another man.

Kenneth Wayne Newman Jr., 32, of the 4400 block of Deans Bridge Road, was jailed after reportedly shooting into a 1986 Cutlass Oldsmobile owned by 21-year-old Eric Benjamin Hall, according to a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report. Mr. Hall told police that Mr. Newman also fired shots at his Hephzibah residence Monday night -- striking a wall.

Mr. Hall told police that Mr. Newman called him Monday and warned him to "stay away from his girlfriend," according to the report.

Mr. Newman is charged with two counts of felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime; two counts of felony aggravated assault; one count of felony criminal damage to property; and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a Richmond County jail official.

Burglars steal items from home of former sheriff

The home of a former Richmond County sheriff was burglarized Tuesday.

Thieves stole jewelry, medicine and ex-Sheriff Bill Anderson's badge from his Sparks Drive home, according to a sheriff's report. The total value of the items taken was $2,071, the report stated.

Mr. Anderson served as sheriff of Richmond County in the 1970s.

Deadline nearing to vote on GVW incorporation

The voter registration deadline for the Graniteville-Vaucluse-Warrenville incorporation referendum is Saturday, according to a news release from the Aiken County Registration and Elections Commission. Anyone who lives in the proposed municipality and is 18 years old by Aug. 26 may register to vote in the referendum.

Voters can register in person at the Voter Registration and Elections office at 916 Vaucluse Road in Aiken between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Voters also may visit www.scvotes.org and print a registration form or obtain a form at any local post office. For more information, call (803) 642-2028.

TRAFFIC BRIEF

RICHMOND COUNTY

- There will be closures on the eastbound and westbound sides of Interstate 20 between Wheeler Road and Bobby Jones Expressway from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, according to a Georgia Department of Transportation news release. Traffic might be stopped for short intervals during that time, the release says.
