Daniel Gainey: Former narcotics investigator was fired for running a chimney sweep business while on duty.

Lt. Daniel Gainey, 37, of Williston, was released from duty Tuesday about 4 p.m., after an internal investigation that began Monday afternoon, said Lt. Michael Frank, spokesman for the sheriff's office.

The investigation found that the lieutenant was operating a chimney sweep business while on duty and that he had not properly completed time sheets of employees under his supervision.

Lt. Frank said employees at the sheriff's office are allowed to have a second job or own a business, but "they just can't operate it while they're supposed to be on duty."

Sheriff Hunt said in a statement that he has also asked SLED to investigate an "allegation involving the use of excessive force" by Lt. Gainey. Lt. Frank would not comment on the specific incident.

Lt. Gainey has been with the sheriff's office since December 2001.

He had been with the narcotics division since October 2007, when Sheriff Hunt appointed him to help rebuild the division, which had vacancies because of a departmental investigation into allegations of criminal misconduct.

getagrip

Such a shame. If officers were paid adequately to support their families, a second job would not be necessary.

christian134

You have that so right getagrip....Thanks for spreading the message now let's hope someone is paying attention....

john

Lots of people have second jobs or side businesses, but you cant do it on the taxpayer dime. Thats stealing.

HYPOCRITES 08

IMHO, the fact that he lost his job is enough. Why try to make a criminal out of an otherwise law abiding person?

christian134

Police and firefighters are by far the most overworked and underpaid people who are on the job....Trash collectors make more money than many of these people and the trash collectors are not the ones people scream loudest when it comes time for help...Why not try something novel and new and give these men and women the money, equipment and resources to do their job without having to supplement their income with side jobs...My word welfare recipients receive more benefits than many of these officers or firemen...This man was merely trying to support his family...He doesn't deserve to be fired he deserves a huge raise...Also did anyone ever think that more money would allow for a better group of folks who are applying for the jobs...

Dark Lord

I don't see the problem with having a side business. If the person is at work or at home he still runs the business. If he was cleaning a chiminey while in police uniform and missed a call thats one thing. But this seems so BS to me. This is based one the info the paper printed. The whole time card thing is retarded. If he messed up the time cards and pay then demote him from supervisor to deputy. Glad I don't work for Aiken County.

double_standard

Many people in public service are underpaid but how can they get raises when you all complain so much about the taxes.

BarstoolDreamer

I can't believe that they do not tell police officers how much money they will be making before they start thier jobs......hmmm, they must not tell teachers either.

AikenGrandmother

So what ever happened to all of the others that were fired before? That was hushsed really fast

ggaston743

To BarstoolDreamer: Some people take a job because they are dedicated to the work. Money is not the driving force to take that job. But lets face it.... peole should get paid a salary that is enough to live on.

Lets stop paying the 'big wig's seating in the head office the big bucks and start paying decent salaries to those doing the 'real' work!

sctex

Now I know why the sheriffs dept. can't stop drug trafficking on Seymour dr. They are to busy.

sctex

This guy should have to pay huge fine.

Life is good

This is so funny, I was married to one of the LT's that is currently working for Aiken county, I have been divorced for about 2 years now and I knew about this Chimney sweeping job. I think Sherrif Hunt needs to look more into what his officers are doing. I knew the ones that got fired, my ex should have too. After our divorce he was not paying his taxes "how can you do that" and work to serve and protect? Also they have a big policy on cheating well mine was living with one of the female deputies and we were still married. Sherriff Hunt you need to wake up and see who you have working for you.

john

If I work on a side business while at work and get caught, Im gone. Thats what happened to the RC lawyer, thats what would happen to most people. I dont aruge that public safety folks arent heros and shouldnt get paid more, but dont make him a victim of the paycheck. People have to live within their means. This guy was a LT, so he was a leader and should be held to a high standard. If he was on the clock and attending to his side job, he F'd up and was subject to discipline.

cantbelieveit

Holy cow....I can't believe anyone is defending this man! There are police deputies in my family and they work hard, get paid little, have second jobs...but they do their second job when they are off from the first! I refuse to feel sympathetic to him because he has a low paying job. Many of us do! And did any one notice that he is also being investigated for "allegation involving the use of excessive force". I feel for his family, but this man was taking advantage. If he was putting his life on the line for us and should be excused for that, then how could he be paying attention while running another business? He was hired to clean up corruption, not chimneys. Come on, I know everyone knows better than this!

Life is good

Umm What about his medical supply job??? Did they check out that.

crazyoldman

Come on now, everybody I know that has a so called side job uses the phone or goes to breakfast, lunch or dinner and does stuff to support the other job. I’m just here to say that Mike Hunt don’t play. If the Sheriff aint happy, aint nobody happy.

mickeymoose

I agree with "cantbelieveit". Do job #1 at job # 1 and job #2 at Job #2. I understand they don't get paid well but there are a lot of people working in other jobs that don't pay well either. I am sure that if I did some of my 2nd jobs work at my first job I would be fired too.

jack

John, I found while working at Ft Gordon, that more than one employee there operated businesses from their government offices and phones and their government pay was quite adequate. Too bad law enforcement isn't paid what they are really worth to preclude such a situation as this.

crazyoldman

Ok, ok, everybody knows that people in law enforcement spend a whole lota time doing a whole lota nothing. So, what’s the big deal about this guy doing something with his whole lota nothin time.

TakeAstand

While I agree th man should not have been doing another job while on duty... if they started taking away all these gov't leeches support when they have more kids while already not working and being supported, then they would breed less criminals and we could pay our law enforcement more and have more cops. Instead the idots of this country think we need to pay officers crap and condone lifelong gov't leeches who breed more criminals and leeches!!!!!! We need to protest and strike on paying taxes until they do something about these leeches... isn't that the way you get something done?? I'll be one of the first with a picket sign!!!!! Anyone with me???? lol

Honden

Does anyone know what a paramedic makes? Think about it next time you need one. The answer will scare the heck out of you.

Beach Brat

I think all the officers should buy a couple section 8 houses on Seymour Drive in NA, run drug and crack business' the rent will be paid by the taxpayer and the extra income would offset their salaries. They would not have to worry about an endless supply of renters and it takes an act of congress to close then down.

crazyoldman: That's really ignorant what you said refering to: "Ok, ok, everybody knows that people in law enforcement spend a whole lota time doing a whole lota nothing" lets just hope you said it and not really ment it because if you ment it you have something wrong with you or you live where nothing ever happens. Anybody that works for the Sheriff's Office makes nothing at all for Jeopardizing there life every day they go to work they have to support the familys at home and work as many specials or other job as needed. And I know that for a fact. Life anymore is so exspensive you got to do what you got do to make ends meet. But like "mickeymoose" said Do job #1 at job # 1 and job #2 at Job #2. But like I said That was really ignorant to say crazyoldman.

This comment goes out to OUTSPOKEN....oh how easy it is to be a blogger. Sit back, behind your anonymity and say whatever you feel. You got personal. Daniel Gainey was and is a GREAT Law Enforcement Officer. This is POLITICAL BS and is outrageous. Maybe your husband sought comfort in someone else's arms because you are COLD, and spend your time blogging about things that aren't your business. To all that know him, you know what kind of a man he is, good, decent, hard working. ENOUGH SAID!!!

john

Jack, they are wrong as well.

Life is good

I did'nt say he was a bad cop. But honey he is no angel... I know he has cheated on his wife. Its a soap opera around there. Maybe you are one of them. Who knows. As far as my ex I treated him like gold. I know what goes on . Oh Yeah I am not a cold person. I am a very fun, loving person.

This message is directed to outspoken-----Ms. Outspoken , I would like you to know first off that I do not blame you for divorcing your husband for what happened , you get a big thumbs up from me for that but, herein lies the problem I have with your comment. You , My dear, may be a woman scored , however that does not give you the right to publicly make such an accusation against my son- in - law , yes , I said my son- in - law , and I am proud of the husband he has been to my daughter and the father he has been to my grandchildren. And I am proud of his dedication to law enforcement. It is so easy to point a finger at someone else, but as the saying goes , OH BUT BY THE GRACE OF GOD --GO I----- , all of whom that may have a negative thing to say , just remember in the walk of life , you may be next. And as for your accusation , if you have the proof in the pudding , my e-mail address is bfo1955@yahoo.com , otherwise , you need to keep your mouth shut , our family will suffer enough from these BS accusations , I am sure yours has from the past events. I am proud to call Daniel , my son- in -law!!!!!!!!!Got it!!!!!

I agree that you should do the job that the employer is paying you to do. You should do job #1 at job #1 and job #2 at job #2. But, how many time have you or have you personally witnessed a co-worker taking care of personal business. Whether we are calling the school to talk to the teacher, make appointments, scratch out to-do lists, or Lord forbid just gossipping with a friend on the phone, you are stealing company time. I was at my doctor's receptionist desk to schedule another appointment while she was having a good laugh with her friend (you could tell by the topic and the delight). Then she told her friend to hold acting as if Ihad the nerve to intrude by interrupting her conversation for her to do her job.
