Save gas by making slower autos

To the individual who thinks the government should lower the speeding limit to 50 mph: Nice idea, but it won't work. Why? Look around -- when the speed limit is posted 45, most people are going 55 or 60; when it is posted 55, they go 65 or 70, etc.

The solution, therefore, since most people seem unable to restrain or monitor themselves relative to their foot on the gas pedal, is for the automobile manufacturers to construct the cars so that they can go no faster than, say, 55 to 60 mph -- with no way to add a converter or any other mechanism that will make it go faster. And if that would be impossible, then there should be strict and severe fines if one is caught doing so.

This is the only way that the law can ever hope to make people go the speed limit, and might also be the only way we can hope to lower our gas consumption.

Or . . . we could just mind our own business.

End the "Burning Food" government program will cut the cost of gas & food. Eliminating the $.54 duty on imported Ethanol will cut the gas price NOW. What's wrong with our congressmen?? They are in the pocket of Iowa corn growers & Ethanol special interest. Term limits now.

Lets make bicycles mandatory, or walking, or horse riding. If only there weren't any cars. (big sigh)

Wow, I've had some dumb ideas, but this is really stupid. The ACES should have kept this one and saved Cindy Meyers the embarrassment. I suppose she has never had to speed anywhere before. Yeah right! What hypocrisy.

Just BRILLIANT...poor cindy taken one too many to the head apparently.

I for one don't think that this letter writer know what they are talking about. I own an american made car. It is a 2001 modal and since the fuel cost has risen I have been paying very close attention to fuel consuption and MPG. I found that my car with the way it was contructed, for long highway travel actually seems to get the best milage at around 67 mph. Any higher than that and milage goes down, any lower than that and milage goes down. I set cruise control on 67 mph and I get the best economy my car can afford me. This 55 mph may have been appropriate in the 70s but todays cars obviously have a different dynamic.

The LTE's today are stellar

Nice thought. I'll bet my last dollar people would eat less first, because their doctors told them they're overweight, before they lighten up on the gas pedal. Better yet, people should take public transportation if feasible. Take car pools. Again, the reality is we Americans think owning a car and travelling fast is a Constitutional right. I'll surrender my guns first before I slow down.

Cyndy, Cyndy, Cyndy. We like to drive fast cars and we like to drive them fast.

Great idea Cindy. I would also like it if the government would come into all of our homes and regulate our air conditioners to 84 F in the summer and heat to 64 F in the winter. I also think an 8:00 PM curfew would save gas and energy. Cindy, if you want to buy a Prius or any other boring ugly car, knock yourself out. Please keep you foot off my gas pedal and quit ruining my life!
