At last, a new political day is dawning

Times have changed, and the better candidate won again in the 10th Congressional District. Seems simple enough, but it would also seem that some self-proclaimed "experts" in this political arena still don't get it right!

Last year, during a special election, Paul Broun "upset" the then-shoo-in candidate, Jim Whitehead. But as I indicated in a letter to the editor then, Broun proved to be more articulate and much more of an independent thinker than did Mr. Whitehead. Again, Mr. Whitehead was, and is, a fine gentleman.

The same thing happened this year, in that Barry Fleming proved what his true mettle was by using less-than-honorable tactics in his campaign to pull down Broun, instead of trying to elevate his own ideas and articulate what and how he would represent the people of the 10th District.

Columbia County has changed vastly in the past 15 to 20 years. The local pundits would do well to rethink their views regarding the political climate of this area. Many people have moved into the county who are not, nor do they desire to be, part of the apparent old-guard political machine that would anoint its candidate, then expect everyone to vote in lockstep for its golden child. And what matters is where our representative will lead us or carry us politically; it does not matter where his or her street address is.

Paul Broun was attacked by the power hungry machine of Columbia County, and he weathered it with class and integrity, and I am very pleased that he did! We the people spoke loudly and clearly. Today, it's a new day in Columbia County politics, and this is indeed refreshing. To the self-pronounced political experts: Get used to it, or get over it!

Don't forget those of us in Lincoln County that supported Mr. Broun

I'm glad Broun won ,too, but gloating over politics is silly and serves no purpose except to rag the losers.

The primary is over, the people have chosen, now let's concentrate on November. He still has another election and the Democrats want Georgia to turn blue all over. We have a new candidate to learn about. Let's get focused.

(07-17) 04:00 PDT Washington - -- As the Bush administration proposes backstopping mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with a $300 billion line of credit and Congress contemplates another economic stimulus, the question is who will bail out the government?

"People seem to think the government has money," said former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker. "The government doesn't have any money."

A rare consensus has developed across the political spectrum that the government's own fiscal affairs are precarious, with an astonishing $53 trillion in long-term liabilities, according to the Government Accountability Office.

To put that number in human terms, the debt has reached $455,000 per U.S. household. As that debt grows, the United States increasingly relies on foreigners, including China and Middle East oil producers, for financing.

"The factors that contributed to our mortgage-based subprime crisis exist with regard to our federal government's finances," said Walker, now head of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, a group established to raise alarms about the nation's budget. "The difference is that the magnitude of the federal government's financial situation is at least 25 times greater."

La Twon, you had a comment removed. Your outspokenness is always short of reprimand ( though you do spend a lot of time telling the obvious truth). What happened?

Fleming was on the right track, but he went way too negative. Just because Broun won the primary doesn't make him a good Congressman for our district. Fleming may have had a "power hungry machine," but he was ran because he thought Broun wasn't representing our values. And was he?

Paul Broun voted down children and veterans' benefits every chance he got. He failed to vote for a critical children protection bill, VOTED to legalize medicinal marijuana, and was busy legislating his own personal agenda while our economy was going down the toilet.

Don't think Broun walked out of this primary clean, either. He used OUR taxpayer money to campaign against Fleming, and so far as to suggest that Fleming wasn't a Christian while on air.

Saxon's a great alternative. He's a veteran and long time military man, as well as a small business owner. He's firm on his values, and seems honest-to-God sick with the way things are being done in Washington.

At the very least, for all those that can't stand Paul Broun (count me in), a conservative Democrat like Saxon is a good clothespin vote.
