And when do you propose to have a camp that teaches social skills to boys? They need it more than the girls do!
Wearing pink T-shirts, more than 20 girls eagerly asked and answered questions during Camp Be Your Best.
"Our goal was to help the girls develop life skills that will help them grow into productive young ladies," said Cher Best, the president of Cher's Sisters Only Club, the organizer of the camp. "We didn't want a camp that would serve as a baby-sitting service. We wanted a camp where the participants would really benefit from the workshops."
The daylong camp Saturday for girls ages 11-14 covered such topics as education, health, money management and etiquette. It was held at Olde Town Community Center.
The organization worked with Augusta Housing Authority to identify girls who would benefit most from the seminars, she said.
"They've been really good about asking in-depth questions and answering questions," Ms. Best said. "Some of this information is reinforcing what they should already know and clarifying some things for them."
Many members of the organization plan to expand their involvement beyond the camp and become mentors for the girls, she said.
"We didn't want to get involved for one day and say that's it," she said. "We want to build relationships with these girls and let them know we are here for them."
The organization plans to make the camp an annual event.
Camp Be Your Best was sponsored by Cher's Sisters Only Club, the housing authority, Positive Women Taking Action, Everything Girly, Amerigroup, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and radio station WKSP-FM (96.3).
