Georgia State Patrol will be watching trucks on highway

Today through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Georgia State Patrol troopers will step up patrols to curb a recent string of accidents involving 18-wheelers.

Troopers from Thomson, Washington, Milledgeville and Hartwell posts will focus their safety efforts on trucks that travel Georgia highways 56 and 25 and Bobby Jones Expressway, according to Troop E Lt. Donnie Smith.

Trucks will be targeted for excessive speeds, unsafe and improper equipment, following too closely and general unsafe practices. Overweight trucks traveling Brown Road to International Paper also will be watched, Lt. Smith said.

Cross Creek drama group in need of funds for festival

The Cross Creek High School Drama Department has been selected to perform in a prestigious arts festival, but it is still looking for financial support to make the trip to Edinburgh, Scotland.

Donations are coming in almost daily, said Leah Soderberg, the department's director. About $7,000 has been collected, which is just enough for the first payment, but the drama students must raise $40,000 for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The festival includes more than 18,000 performances of music, theater, dance, and comedy during its run from July 29 to Aug. 11. Cross Creek will perform on the American High School Theatre stage.

"The excellence of our program was recognized by the American High School Theatre Festival Board of Advisors as one of the top 50 in the nation," Ms. Soderberg said. For more information or to contribute, call (706) 772-8140.

Man arrested, charged in 21-year-old woman's assault

Police have arrested an Augusta man who was accused of raping, imprisoning and beating an Augusta woman last month.

Anthony Wayne Holden, 43, of the 200 block of Ellis Street, is charged with felony aggravated assault, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and aggravated sodomy, according to Richmond County jail records.

Police say that on June 27, Mr. Holden burned a 21-year-old woman's face with boiling water, stabbed her several times and raped her. The victim suffered second-degree burns and required stitches to her body and staples to her head.

Mr. Holden was booked into jail at 10 p.m. Sunday, according to jail records. He was being held without bond.

Body of 9-year-old boy who drowned Sunday identified

The body of a 9-year-old boy who drowned at Thurmond Lake on Sunday has been identified.

Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins said Jonathan Tyler Thomas of the 1900 block of Diane Drive in Augusta was wading in shallow water in the lake's West Dam area when he encountered a sudden drop-off and lost his footing.

Passenger dies after he is thrown from car in crash

A 21-year-old man was killed in a single vehicle crash Sunday night, according to the Aiken County coroner.

The crash happened about 10:35 p.m. The unrestrained passenger, identified as Andre Garrett of the 100 block of Hampton Avenue, was in a vehicle driven by Brandon Curry of the 400 block of Jehossee Drive.

According to the coroner's office, the men were traveling north on Monetta Street when Mr. Curry ran off the road onto the right shoulder. After about 150 feet on the shoulder, the vehicle struck a tree, overturned and ejected Mr. Garrett.

The crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner's Office. It was the second fatal crash in Aiken County during the weekend, according to Coroner Tim Carlton.

Brown sale gets judge's go-ahead

COLUMBIA --- Thursday's auction of more than 300 of James Brown's belongings will be permitted, after a judge's order Monday.

On Wednesday, trustees Albert Dallas and Alfred Bradley filed an emergency request with the South Carolina Court of Appeals to halt the sale.

They were at odds with Adele Pope and Robert Buchanan, who had been appointed by the court to manage Mr. Brown's estate. The auction drew protests from Mr. Dallas and Mr. Bradley, in addition to Mr. Brown's heirs and individuals claiming to be related to him.

Here we go again! In May, June, and now July there is an article about the Cross Creek High School Drama Department needing money to go to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The 'must have the money by' date, the amount of money needed, and the amount of money already collected/donated has varied every month. As I commented last month, since this is an extracurricular activity, no one should have 'promised' this trip to the Creekside Players International Drama Team without having the funds committed to pay for it first.

Personally, I'm saving up my money for the increase school tax proposed by the RCBOE, which will be a BIG increase for me as I'm over 65!

Congrats to the Cross Creek Drama Department. Hope you make it to Scotland! Hope you earn the money and aren't just sitting back waiting for checks in the mail every day too. Working toward the goal is part of the process and the learning experience.

patriciathomas

If the drama department at Cross Creek isn't able to raise the money for the trip this year, they can put it toward next years festival and work to raise the money by then.

While the death of the 9 year old boy is a terrible tragedy for his family, friends and community, it should also be a wake up call to ALL parents, teach your children to swim or keep them away from water. Close supervision during potentially dangerous situations is another important parenting skill.

they need to close the dam to raise the water level in the lake to eliminate these drop off hazzards. the dam doesnt even make enough electricity to justify having it.

Reality

I'm saving to go to Scotland as well, I will accept all donations of cash...

I know for a fact, these students at Cross Creek do work hard and yes I hope they raise enough money, but when you do not have the participation of some teachers, staff and other personel-it is very hard to find this kind of money. These students are not getting a break this summer, they work hard every day preparing for this trip and they have shows coming up on July 18-19 and 25-26, at 8PM, Let's support them and come out and see the PLAY. CCHS faculty-Staff-other Personnel Please support the DRAMA CLUB..
As for the little boy drowning, I am very sorry for the family and they are in my prayers. Parents, you have read and reread how the water is low, low-be careful and go only where you know it is safe. Walk the area yourself and go in the water and check out the depth of it.
Please hurry up and sale Brown's Estate, I am tired of hearing about this-so called King. He got lucky and now he is gone let him lay. Sale everything- It appears Mr. Dallas and Bradley cannot get enough of his money. They're greedy wanting more, and his children-give it a break-Let the little one have it to live on-he is young and will need money to grow up and make something of himself. GOOD DAY!

I pray that rabid animal, Anthony Wayne Holden, remains confined to a cell for the rest of his life....Let him make peace with God one day but for the here and now a cell is just the ticket...Oh for exercise arrange for him to be put on a leash in the middle of the courtyard so all may see just what a coward looks and smells like...Lord only knows how many others were harmed before this latest attack...:-(

Christian the rapist needs to be permenantly DISARMED so he cannot commit that act against other prisoners. I say SEX change operation, then drop him off in Saudi Arabia so he can experience the degredation for LIFE>

Congratulations to the students who have worked hard to earn the invitation to Scotland but to the drama teacher...where is the money you've earned? Why not publish who has donated what and then we can support those businesses who support the school? Don't punish the students who have worked hard and achieved this great accomplishment when you won't be honest about how much money you have earned, where it is and who donated.

christian134

Can't fault your solution at all yak1...Sounds like a plan to me..

Sounds like CCHS Drama has alot of ground to make up within two weeks. $40,000 for a trip? How about take fewer kids or do something within the USA. Better planning needed for sure.

disssman

Lets see what we have here. The event will have 18000 performances over a two week period. That comes to 1286 performances per day. Assuming a day will start at 8:00 AM and end at 8: PM it works out to about 9 performances an hour or one every 7 minutes with no repeat performances. What gives here? Is this a valid trip? Come on folks use a little brain power before you give up your hard earned money. By the way what are the children doing (not mommy or daddy) to earn money for the trip?

No_Longer_Amazed

ironpurps: In the May 15, 2008 edition of the AC "The school set a goal of raising $80,000 to send a group of 16 people to the festival, but it has only collected $47,896.97. It has until June 16 to raise the remaining money." $80,000 - $47,896.97 = $32,103.03, but on June 19 they still needed an "additional $40,000," by "July 10." In today's article "About $7,000 has been collected, which is just enough for the first payment, but the drama students must raise $40,000 for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival." I agree with tchnga's 8:39 AM comment about accountability.

No_Longer_Amazed

In the past 'no4word' commented "no one has stepped up to the plate to support this group" and that " the bottom line is if no one in the community decides to get behind them then they will not raise all of the money they need" and "these kids have to suffer for it." Since the AC has had an article about this trip for at least the last 3 months, maybe 'The Staff' could donate the difference.

There must be more than one or two stages for these performances. Maybe you need to check with Davidson Fine Arts School, they have already been. Maybe they could answer some of these questions. And we know about $2000.00 is an increase in Airfare due to fuel charges. Wish I could go but just cost more than my pockeybook could handle. I would have to go raise money for me to go and all donations would be accepted also. We have family that do church Mission trips and we try to give what we have to God and Missions here inthe Godd Ole USA.

whyme

1) I'm glad someone is watching the trucks finally. Yes, they are bigger than cars and thus expect the right-of-way, but they pull out so often without signalling, throw rocks up with signs saying they're not responsible, and often have another trailer swaying behind the first.
2)This drama teacher wasn't too swift directing Annie way back in the 90s for the Augusta Players. They should have done like I'm doing-I found out about an 8th grade middle school trip in 6th grade and have saved a very small amount each month in anticipation of the trip. Planning ahead makes a huge difference. They should have done the same.

NEone

Is it possible that this specific group of students earned the privilege of attending the festival and they didn't have a couple years advance warning? And next year would have to re-earn the privilege? Some comments are so quick to judgment and narrow-minded. Give the kids a break!

motivatedinhepzibah

Good news about cross creek highschool. Shows there are alot of positive things our kids are doing in augusta. I hope the chronicle will get the positive things the kids are doing in augusta. The same attention they loved to show about the negative things.

lifelongresidient

if the school board in their infinte wisdom okayed a gym and a football stadium for 2 of the worst high school in the county, they graduate less than 40% of their seniors, why can't the school board pay for the trip. they can't supply needed textbooks to all of the student but can find millions for a gym and a football stadium, so they might as well pay for cchs. fair is fair. if i had my way i would abolish all extra curricular activites for all under perfoming schools...like in collega if you don't perform in the classroom you don't get to play

MyOpinion2

While GA STATE Patrol is watching, GA Roads and Bridges might want to check out the railroad tracks on 56 past MCBEAN. There is going to be a serious accident there one day. Since that last accident, the tracks have not been the same, they are a mess. EVERYONE that knows about them, practically comes to a full STOP. When the road was first paved you did NOT have to STOP. BUT now if you don't you will tear your car up. MARK my word, its going to happen, it is an accident waiting to happen. Warn the people with a sign stating Be Prepared to STOP, CRAPPY REPAIR JOB ON TRACKS!
